It's not that we can't do it or don't know how it would be possible. We just don't want to add hero units. They don 't fit in with our vision of the mod.

When I had issues with Windows 8 I selected the FOC .exe file specifically (not the launcher) and ran the windows compatibility program (Right click ---> Troubleshoot compatability) and that's what got it to work. Beyond that I can't comment much. I have yet to reinstall FOC on Windows 8.1 since my HDD died.

What Rovert said. Using the compatibility settings tool in Windows 8 is what made it work for me. Another heads up is that it may not recognize your graphics card versus your built-in one. You can fix this by just using the Nvidia control panel or ATI control center to force your graphics card to associate itself with that program.

Well it does make me feel better that it's not just during our mod that you experience the BSOD, but probably a bit more frustrating for you. 
At this point I'm not sure what advice I can give. You might want to try posting on the Petroglyph forums since this is happening to the base game as well and see what they have to offer as advice.

Uh, no 2.1 will probably not fix it Xizer.
BSODs are usually caused by hardware issues or driver issues. Majorstoffer my best advice is that you make sure to update your GPU (mainly) and other computer drivers to the latest ones available. It also wouldn't be bad idea to do a hardware check on your computer (ie. Dell has a built-in one you can access on start-up to check that all of your hardware is working). If this is the only game you're having issues with my bet is that it is a drivers issue. For example my last laptop hated Civilization 3 and would BSOD for no reason until I updated the graphics card drivers.
If that doesn't work please do see if the main game gives you similar issues.
