Well think about it.
A Star Destroyer would be very affective at launching tactical bombardments, and just looks terrifying.
A Tie Defender Is fast and is armed with multiple weapons that would crush terrorists
And A Raider Corvettes just looks cool.

there was also a petition once to build a death star to "bolster national security", but blowing up the planet is not the safest thing for america...
Also 1 Star Destroyer's cost, including the mining and refining the resources, R&D and Assembly(in space since a thing that massive is impossible), not to mention the R&D and construction of the construction yard for the thing would be MASSIVE.
Not to mention that we would burn a new hole in the ozone once again for supplying the resources. Unless of course we build a sky elevator, which would be (once again) needing R&D and construction, and massive ammounts of money. A raider, well it might be affordable, and if retrofitted to also include in-atmospheric operations as well, it could be quite effective as well, especially if you could mass produce the thing. As a one-off ship, the R&D and construction yard's build cost once again doesn't worth the effort. Like the empre, you want to make 1 or two superweapons that can be in only 1 place, instead of building 1000 Tanks which would be able to cover much more ground.
Even the nukes were not a one-off weapons. They detonated two at Japan to end the war, and they were able to build more. You can't just make a one-off weapon, as if you lose it *ahemmDeathstar you can't immediately replace it, and you just lost every dollar you spent on it.
The TIE Defender would also be useless, as it would basically be used in atmospheric combat, which it was not designed to do, and we do not need a space-supperiority fighter if we don't even have battles in space.
And if we are fearing a space invasion from aliens, a weaponized space-station would work better as a first line of defence at the moment. A fleet is only useful if we can use it's mobility, therefore if you have more than 1 system under your command.

Anything without shields would be a giant waste of time.
If we wanted to build a fully loaded ISD from today's technology it would take centuries to even begin getting close to the tech. Assuming FTL travel is possible.
