i don't really know what to think. as always, russia shows a tremendous amount of anti-west bias in attacking Georgia, a pro-west country over a couple of miniscule breakaway states being attacked. however, my sympathy leans towards georgia in that it's just trying to deal with the problem of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, 2 millitant forces who have attacked georgia on countless occasions and are destabilising the country.
my opinion on kosovo differs in that kosovo did little to destabilise serbia, and was diplomatic about it.
millitant breakaway states don't deserve independence.

I think it will probably wind down pretty soon, Georgia did it probably hoping noone would react, but now that Russsia went in so strongly and quickly to protect South Ossetia, Georgia will probably have to back down and retreat

georgia propably though that russia wouldn't react to their doings in south-ossetia. especially with that kind of speed and military power.

I more or less have to agree with Russia on this. They're just trying to protect the Russian citizens, South Ossetia shouldn't even be part of Georgia. However, all the stuff they're doing beyond South Ossetia is wrong, so its a good thing peace talks are starting...

we're not telling russia how to run their war, we're telling them to stop it. The US got approval from the UN for the Iraq War, so it's a little differnt.

I say right on Russians, having to take a vote to defend your own people and a friendly country is just retarded, they went out to get things done.

In this, i think both sides are as bad as each other.

I really dont know whether to believe the statements made by either Georgia or Russia about troop movements, cease-fires, etc.

russia is, at least it claims so, supporting two areas that have declared independence but that no coutnry has recognized. and it seems that those two areas are happy that russia came to intervene.

Quote from: BBC
Russia 'ends Georgia operation'
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to military operations against Georgia, the Kremlin says.

He told officials he had taken the decision to end the campaign after restoring security for civilians and peacekeepers in South Ossetia.

This is good. It'll show the Georgians that the kind of action that they have been taking in South Ossetia won't be tolerated, and since Russia stopped after just taking those areas that should have been independent in the first place it shouldn't cause as much international bullshit as it looked like it was going to.

to be honest, i fail to see what right russia had to attack. south ossettia is NOT russian territory. at the most, it is a breakaway state of Georgia. At the least, it is a part of Georgia.
Here's a comparison of their armies.
GEORGIA
Total personnel: 26,900
Main battle tanks (T-72): 82
Armoured personnel carriers: 139
Combat aircraft (Su-25): Seven
Heavy artillery pieces (including Grad rocket launchers): 95
RUSSIA
Total personnel: 641,000
Main battle tanks (various): 6,717
Armoured personnel carriers: 6,388
Combat aircraft (various): 1,206
Heavy artillery pieces (various): 7,550
Source: Jane's Sentinel Country Risk Assessments

it's overkill.
however, Georgia should try to solve it diplomatically, perhaps devolving power.
