He's a decent antagonist, unique but OP, and had a lot of cool designs and toys. He's also a decent extremist for dealing with the Yuuzhong Vong, and has a nice mannerism of talking. The Empire of the Hand is one of the most interesting ideological factions I've ever encountered in fiction.Sadly these two depictions don't match up. Either the subdorinate Imperial with dreams of a defended galaxy employing tactics to turn warefare in their preventative style of fighting, or the cruel mastermind seeking to reclaim the galaxy as the last Grand Admiral loyal to the Empire and willing to preform any sacrifice to do so, or any act of cruelty. Neither makes sense when paired together, and at best we get Thrawn who when allowed constructed a sound defensive Empire capable of uniting most of the galaxy, but without those freedoms engaged in any amount of dirty work to get the job done. Probably the best example of this is kidnapping the Hand of Judgement to train his own Stormtroopers, done not very idealogically but very logically.
That's Thrawn. Logic first then emotion later. Sometimes commanders need to be cruel if you want to survive. War isn't about who's right its about who's left.
Well the main issue i have with him is he either has multiple personality disorder or Zahn tried too hard to retcon Thrawn into a good guy in later novels. He's shown to be decidedly cruel to the Noghri and delighting in it. He's callous about their deaths, keeps them enslaved by deception and actually jokes about it. He has no qualms about attacking civilian targets unlike later novels and has been shown to be unwilling to give up control, seeing himself as the true Heir to the Empire. He pursues a vendetta against Karrde and Jade to the detriment of the war effort when if he'd left them alone could have prevented massive repercussions.Contrast this Thrawn with the one from Outbound Flight or Choices of One and even the Thrawn in his last battle with Nuso Esva and you have two totally different characters.
