Assault Frigate Mk 1 Discussion
« on: April 06, 2017, 12:16:14 PM »
Mod team has said they're looking into changing the AF's armament to be closer to the Saga Edition loadout which is 3x light turbolaser batteries, 4x quad turbolaser batteries, and 3x turbolaser batteries. What loadout they would have picked will be much more faithful to the Dreadnaught's firepower which it was supposed to have inherited.

So what do you think of this upcoming change?

With this possible change in the loadout, is there a strong case for swapping out the Dreadnaught from the NR roster for another ship?

Would you miss the laser batteries?

If I get time this weekend (I probably won't) I'm going to download 2.2 and use the DP20, Assualt Frigate, and Nebulon B as Frigates with MC80s as a fleet and see if that still works. As using the multipurpose ships together makes up for the deficiencies. The laser cannons aren't that bad.

Yes.  The Dreadnaught would not be a popular ship for the NR.  I would dump it completely.  The NR is already getting another Frigate the Dauntless although I have heard nothing about it's combat effectiveness.

A compromise would be limited production like the CCVSD or only available in the early eras like the Liberty.

I will not miss the Assault Frigate's laser cannons.  Horrible against other ships and poor accuracy against fighters.  The NR has one effective Corvette and a good fighter lineup.

A improved Corona would be welcome as well so the NR has a light Frigate worth using later on.

I would throw a couple CR90's in your fleet because the DP20 is absolutely incompetent at anything besides full time PTE.

You'll see about the DP20. It just has to be used right.

And since when is the Dreadnaught unpopular? It's one of the most well regarded ships (minus the VSD1) I've seen on the forum.

Also the Dauntless is supposed to be in the demo. A sturdy ship that's defensive, but with ions and turbos.

The DP20 rarely fires it's weapons.  I lost all respect for this ship when I lost one to a squadron of Preybirds.

A ship with a crew of 16000 would not be popular to the fledgling NR.  The whole reason the Assault Frigate exists.

Was the DP20 on PTE at the time? Have you tried using it against TIE Defenders?

Political infighting was also popular among the New Republic. Don't have to deal with that ingame.

Although with the addition of Schism Events . . .

The TR team actually plans on adding NR schism events like what was suggested?

I honestly couldn't say, though I could certainly see something like that happen in later era GCs for the NR.

I wanted to find a use for this ship.  I searched the forum and it was recommended to use it as a scout so I used it as such, and then parked it in an asteroid field.  No need for PTW there.  Anyways the battle went on for a while, and I checked up on it to see it getting ravaged by the Preybirds.

Last time I used that ship.  I now sell the ones I get when the game starts.  Someone said in another thread that the CR90 can do anything better and they are 100% correct.  Worst NR space unit in the game.  I will take a Sacheen, Corona or Marauder Cruiser over the DP20.

I don't understand how you could possibly get any usage out of the DP20. Its conc missile launcher fires 4 times. Every 15 seconds. Also doubt it could kill a TIE Defender squadron on it's own.

The Assault Frigate is a tad better in 2.2 since it has 2 X-wings with it but it still eats garbage. I doubt you'll get very far since with that fleet comp your X-Wings and Y-Wings will be doing just about all the work, and Anti-fighter corvettes(like the IPV...) got buffed in some way.

Furthermore the single laser cannon hard-points are that bad. Especially when you consider you're using 2 pop for either:
2 X-wing squadrons, 2 Quad lascannons, 2 Lascannons, and 2 turbolasers
OR
1 Xwing 1 Y-Wing 2 lascannons and 2 turbolasers with a minor ability to be a bullet sponge

In both cases the lascannon armament is outshone by a single CR90.

A new Imp ship, the Gladiator SD has two single lascannon hardpoints. At least in it's case it has dual turbolasers and proton torpedoes so it's good at SOMETHING. Additionally fielding 2 skipray squadrons that are on par with if not better than B-Wings. While only being slightly more expensive than either of the above.

I have this sinking feeling that the Assualt Frigate would be more loved if my X-Wings weren't getting shredded by Gladiators with bigger guns, it's fighters outfielded by Secutors, and IPV spam.

In addition at this point I've found CR90s getting beaten by ARC-170s, two squads one shotting the back of it. A single Y-Wing squad of my own couldn't even penetrate the shielding of a CR90 Zinji had.

Yeah, ARC-170's started out as UBER OP'd.  They've been nerfed a bit, but not sure that they didn't need a bit more, although definitely NOWHERE near the amount they needed at first (literally the ARC-170's that initially spawned would survive anything thrown at them, a single squadron could take out multiple squadrons of x-wings or Tie/in's).
People should not be afraid of their government...governments should be afraid of their people.

The ARC-170 situation is a little strange. Their defense numbers are definitely a bit higher than they should be (stronger than an X-Wing) but they're not so absurd that they explain why they're so much more sturdy, since they're weaker than a lot of fighters in that department as well. One thing which definitely helps them is the fact that they have a back-facing laser, which is a huge help in EaW. We'll certainly be taking another pass at it to bring it into line for the full release, but it's more likely they'll be replaced with a combination of a different TIE type for Maldrood, and the Clutch.

Fair enough, fair enough. I just found it annoying that it moves faster, has far better defense, and seems to deal more damage then my basic bomber. The NR is supposed to rely on fighter superiority and yet fighting the GM feels like banging my head against a wall due to all their cheap tricks and Secutors.

I agree that secutors definitely give maldrood fighter superiority more often than not.
