Planetary Siege

What is the best way to conduct a planetary siege? It seems to take forever to bring down a fully upgraded planet (as is the MO for the AI); maybe this is intended, otherwise I am doing it wrong.

you talking about land or space battles? if land use air units about three units and send them to the power generator to take out there turbolasers batteries and shield if they have it, use some ground troops and tanks and artillery and send those out to attack move.
