A friend also told me that the entire EU was declared non-canon. Is that true?
That is also what i have heard.
Abrams does sort of the exact same thing to Star Wars, what he did to Star Trek, only that he doesn't touch the canon of the old Films, and instead wrecks the EU after the Battle of Endor.

@Pali
yeah, you do have a point.

Yeah. All of the prior-Expanded Universe canon has been rebranded as Legends, and is now separate from the new coordinated Canon (which includes all the movies, the Clone Wars and Rebels animated TV shows, and novels/games/comics being released from April 2014 onwards).  That doesn't mean characters, locations, technologies or events from the EU can't or won't reappear in the new canon, just that they have to be explicitly brought in/referenced through the new media.

in terms of technological developments re: X-Wings and TIE Fighters in the new trailer, the SW galaxy really does seem to have reached a development peak.  How long have lightsabers, hyperdrives, repulsorlift generators and turbolasers been around? 1,000 years, 10,000 years?

Just using a couple of examples from the Expanded Universe:
  • the Dreadnaught Cruiser was designed at least 80 years prior to the Clone Wars and was still in demand in 10ABY (Katana fleet) - that's 115 years.
  • the Millennium Falcon was built in 60BBY which makes it over 80 years old by the start of the Vong War.

And just going from the movies themselves (all three trilogies), R2-D2 and C-3PO are both at least in their late 60's (32 years between TPM and ANH, four years between ANH and ROTJ, 30 years between ROTJ and TFA) - not bad for a couple of droids that have been at the centre of galactic affairs for three generations!

Yes, but a very slight modification would fix that. Also, you know those words are spelled with s, right?

If the lightsaber hilt were made of something that another lightsaber wouldn't instantly cut - beskar, perhaps - then the crossguard design makes some sense.  It'd require a different fighting style, but there are plenty of those.

Which means Disney would have to create something--gasp!--original for their new film. And the fans would love that.

Seriously, though, I know the crossguard design really got a few people. I've heard it described as the Rebels design philosophy leaking into the films, which may or may not be good. If they rely too much on gimmicks, it's going to turn people off, period.
