Just saw it, pretty cool, only thing I really found questionable was the ball droid, everything else was pretty sweet looking.

Well, there's not a whole lot else you can put in a minute-long trailer besides explosions and cool stuff happening. If you watch the trailers for the OT, they are almost entirely action-focused.

I thought it looked pretty sweet, I'm glad to see the Empire is still alive and kicking!

Initial thoughts from a couple of play-backs:

Is it just me or does the voice-over at the start (on the desert-scape) sound awfully similar to Benedict Cumberbatch in the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness?

Probe-droid sounds in the background of the scene with the helmet-less Stormtrooper.  Do we think they got an upgrade too?

Is this desert-planet Tatooine again?

X-Wing pilots with Rebel Crests - does this mean Rebel Alliance and Empire have continued to fight it out for the past 30 years in the new canon then?  Destroying the Death Star II and killing Vader and Palpatine didn't have the same destructive impact as the previous EU led us to believe!

Is the cross-shaped red lightsaber a hint that the wielder is on some Dark-side crusade?

Hey, look! Han replaced the sensor dish that Lando carelessly lost in the bowels of the Death Star!  Only he had to settle for a rectangular one this time.

Why no Episode VII numerals at the end?

Not just you.  JJ doesn't have many original bones in his body.

Probably, though I've always felt that lightsabers strangely lacked any sort of hand protection - it could be that was the idea, or simply someone decided "that looks cool!"

Seeing that the new canon seems to have most Jedi/Sith lightsabers with a gimmick of sorts (Rebels is honestly guilty of this, though I guess if we're blaming at any starting point, the prequels brought attention to the double bladed and curved hilts), I wasn't too surprised.

Though the fact the lightsaber itself is less beam of light and kinda like a long blowtorch with some plasma/electric spurts is what surprises me.

It's probably both. Hopefully it will lead to less of the infamous hand cutting off.

I don't know why, I just didn't feel any hype for it. I felt more for the Battle of the Five Armies and Jurassic World trailers. This just, I don't know, nothing really. Some cool scenes with the Stormies and X wings but I just didn't feel the pull the trailers for the re releases of the classic or even the prequals evoked.

In fairness, it's a teaser, not a full trailer like those are.

Agreed.  Seems like they're really hyping it, I just can't seem to care in the least.

Wasn't Jurassic World just a teaser trailer? Or did they do a teaser trailer swiftly followed by a proper trailer?

I sort of have to agree, the Star Wars charm is a tad lacking. The visuals are sweet and does feel like the Galaxy has indeed moved on tech-wise.

I think it would give even more impact if we are given a shot of either Luke (the main hero of the OT) or Han (one of the more iconic and overall badass figures of the OT) as to say "oh yeah, you're looking at Star Wars here"

The shot with the Falcon is great but anyone from the cast (even Chewie) would make me feel right at home.

Have to agree with everyone here. The trailer looks like Star Wars, but doesn't FEEL like Star Wars. Love them or hate them, the Prequels still had a very distinct feel where you could just look at it and say: that is Star Wars. Other than the iconic ships, you could have told me it was any other generic SciFi-Fantasy and I would have believed it.

That being said, I really like the offset wing X-wings, and the Stormtrooper helmets are nice. What's with the Empire still using the same old, boring TIE fighters though?? And that Football droid just needs to go away.

TBH I am more looking forward to Jurassic World than SW VII right now.

I was wondering that myself!
Even in "Return of the Jedi" they had Tie-Interceptors.
So i kind of expected to see these, or perhaps even see some Tie Defender.
But who knows, perhaps there will be some in the movie.

Well, I can't speak for what you've seen, but there definitely exists at least one official full trailer for Jurassic World.

What's with the Empire still using the same old, boring TIE fighters though??

They probably put them in because that's what we think when we see star wars, TIE Fighters, X-wings and a scary helmet with a scary guy in it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Emperor returned (hopefully a fifth time otherwise it ruins to much).

I'm really trying to care here guys...but I can't. I just can't. Any enthusiasm I had for the franchise went down the toilet with the Expanded Universe. Seeing all the hype and excitement for something that should mean a lot to me, but is just going to be completely alien no matter what, just makes me feel sad.

I have a big problem with X-Wings and Tie Fighters being shown. This is supposed to take place roughly 30 years ABY right?

A friend also told me that the entire EU was declared non-canon. Is that true?

Considering that even in EU canon, X-Wing and TIE variants are still being used by 30 ABY, I can't really object to them - if the EU could find ways to justify it (variants of XJ-wings, TIE fighters and interceptors mentioned as used during Vong-war period and beyond), I'll grant Disney the benefit of the doubt on that until given reason not to.

It's strange to think about, but the general level of technology available in the Star Wars universe has remained fairly static for thousands of years - arms buildups tended to be reactive to other arms buildups compositionally, but not so much technologically.  The X-Wing was designed in many ways as a response to the TIE fighter; it matched it in speed, nearly so in maneuverability, and had greater firepower, durability, and incomparably superior operational range.  It was a perfect counter for a force to use that generally benefited from having better-trained/skilled pilots, though fewer, yet still with a decent amount of underground funding to supply them.  The TIE Interceptor was designed in response to the X-Wing, though along the same design philosophies as the original TIE fighter - greater speed, maneuverability, and killpower, essentially serving just as the "better TIE fighter" variant.  The A-Wing was designed to fill the Alliance's need for a hit-and-fade strike craft that could operate at long range on its own.  The B-Wing was the Alliance's need for a long-range anti-capital strike craft, since it didn't have the capital ships to spare.  Yet not a single one of these ships was really a leap forward in technology - not even the TIE Defender, which was pretty much designed to dominate all of the above.  It was simply cramming more expensive, more complicated equipment into the fighter frames, maybe in new arrangements (like the B-Wing's gyroscopic uniqueness), but it was the same basic tech at work.

Edit: Hell, if anything, in the Star Wars universe a lot of technology has seemed to somewhat regress over the millennia - gravity well generators and cloaking devices in particular seem to pop in and out of general knowledge across the time periods.
