nuclear generator would be big all right. but you can also build bigger ship. why send a three man team to explore Mars? they can go there and come back. what's the point of that? build bigger ship, send more men to explore and get more and better knowledge.

NASA is planning to use a moon base for a possible mission to mars. China just wants to prove that they can get there.
