Usually an officer aboard a ship is in charge of specific functions. For instance, the Executive Officer, the second-in-command, assists the Commanding Officer (Captain, Commander, depends on the size of the ship) with all duties, and is in charge of making sure everything is running smoothly every morning. Operations Officer is in charge of making sure schedules are posted and the crew is notified of any major events planned throughout the week. Supply Officer is in charge of distribution and inventorying of supplies throughout the ship, anything from weapons from the armory to new uniforms. Those are just a few examples, but it takes the combined effort of all the officers to make a ship run smoothly.

It is a separate branch that supports the navy. just like stormtrooper corps is a separate branch that supports the army.
