Best way to destory capital ships
« on: August 30, 2012, 12:48:02 AM »
As the New Republic, we can't really go toe-to-toe with an ISD so I send some bombers after the engine and the others after their sheild generator. How do you Imperials do it(Since EVERY other faction is full of imperials).
Long live the New Republic!
I'm not dead!
(apparently...)

The Nebula Star Destroyer is better than the Imperial I and II in every possible way.
The MC90 does slightly les damage, but has way stronger shields and can usually take either the ISDI or II on in a 1v1.
Majestics can beat an ISD with a small amount of support.
1.5 MC80B's is about equal with an ISDII.

What about tactics to sink a SSD? I have been avoiding playing as the NR because of Imperial heroes such as Isard and Kaine makes it hard for me to expand in era 1.

Said it before but all in all ddnt take too much to kill Isaard over Commenor for me. Had an Ion cannon that I fired twice during the battle. I had Ackbar that I had brought up to reinforce it as my other MC80b's were preparing an assault on Corellia. Just him, an Assault Frigate, two Dreadnaughts, Quasar, and a couple Corellian Corvettes vs her, an ISDI, and some other small escorts that I forgot.

Shot Isaard with the ion cannon then sent all my bombers straight at her, Fighters at theirs, and my ships at the ISD and the couple ships they had. After I had mopped up the escorts and losing a Dreanaight I used Ackbar as a distraction while my other two ships began flanking Isaard to get behind her. By the time they got behind her, the closer broadside was completely wiped out so finishing her off became easy.

In Hunt for Zsinj i killed the Iron Fist by attacking it from the rear side with 10 Battle Dragons and 10 Novae, i only lost 1 Nova. The SSD was turning around and flying back to the base, then i moved my fleet to attack when it was right in place.

I dont think this tactic would help against a human player. (Another point fo me was that the enemy didnt move the rest of his fleet (2 ISD) in battle

SSDs are actually very easy to sink because the AI doesn't utilize them properly. The best way to use that beast of a ship is as a giant firing platform that you jump right into the enemy lines. But really all it takes to bring down an SSD is time.

Here's a forum thread that discussed multiple strategies to deal with SSDs. http://gutr.swrebellion.com/forums/index.php/topic,2259.0.html

While torps and missiles no longer bypass shields, the strategies discussed there are still sound.

And yeah a planetary ion cannon is extremely helpful. I just took down Lusankya and another Executor in the same battle over Levian Two in Art of War with nothing but frigates (no capital ships) as that planet starts off isolated.
"That's not what the Empire would have done, Commander. What the Empire would have done was build a super-colossal Yuuzhan Vong-killing battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits, employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors, and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened? It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors, or some other mistake, and a hotshot enemy pilot would drop a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. Now that's what the Empire would have done."

Isard is in the Lusankya in era 1.

Admiral difficulty, I lost two CR90s, one Nebulon B, one Dreadnaught cruiser, and one Golan Is. I started with 3 CR90s, 2 DP20s,  4 Nebulon Bs, 3 Quasar Cruisers, 4 Dreadnaught and Cruisers, 3 Assault Frigates.

I started by going after Isard, since she offered a bonus. Hit her with the ion cannon, which dropped her shields down to like 10%, swarmed her with all my fighters and bombers,, ran away all my frigates all the way to the other end of the map. I ran my corvettes around to pick off enemy fighters coming after my shipyard and Golans. Once the Executors were engaged, damaged, and had their shields down, I brought my frigates back into the picture, maneuvering them around to the aft of the Executors, to finish them off.

The AI didn't seem to consider my frigates and fighters to be a real threat, because I expected it to retreat with at least the 2nd Executor once it was damaged enough. The AI didn't retreat even when Isard was almost dead, and didn't retreat even when the second Executor was down to a few hardpoints like they normally do when I engage them with capital ships. That might be some weird calculation the AI does to gauge the danger to its forces.

Hope this helps

As the Pantetstar Alignment(I spelt that wrong I think), I can easily thrash ISD 1 and 2 with My weaker but more versitile Munificents, when it comes to groups of them, Praetor-II, more than eough to completely obliterate them.
