Hypervelocity Gun question

When I use the Hypervelocity gun, why is there these huge explosive-looking flashes that come up after I hit my intended target? It doesn't effect my game at all, but kind of bugs me sometimes.

It's part of an explosion particle that we removed before, but apparently only got partially.
