Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
« on: May 26, 2012, 05:52:13 PM »
Sins of a Solar Empire is probably my favourite strategy game, and the new stand-alone expansion is currently in the final beta phase. If you pre-order you get access to the beta, with the final release on the 12th of next month. If you own the previous versions, you can get the game for $10 off (29.99 instead of 39.99)

I never heard of the game. But I got curious and tried it this week. ( steam offers Trinity for only 15 euros )

I read somewhere it has a steep learning curve, and yes it is quite the challenge. I'm still in the learning stages, but it is A LOT of fun.
It could have looked a bit better though, but that's only a small minus, and I did see that it has a Star wars mod.

Yes it's a steep curve, there's no real tutorial mode or single player storyline mode. You have to go in and start playing. Fortunately the AI isn't too brutal and you can start out with fairly small maps and work up.

There are two Star Wars mod,
- Requiem, which is meant to addon SW races to the existing ones
- Sins of a Galactic Empire, which is meant to be a total conversion, SW races only

We happen to be hosting SOGE too, but the most frequent updates are usually the forums - http://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/411648

Aesthetics are generally just a plus in the best games.

It is by no means 'bad looking', but a bit to flashy, which makes it looking childish. ( Well that's my opinion. )
( I know it was supposed to playable on older machines and .... )

What I've seen from the new rebellion game I liked a lot better. But it probably requires a better set up to play it.

The Sins of a galactic empire mod looks like something I will definitely try in the future.
Are there plans for the new game also? They have 6 factions, that's maybe a bit to much for a star wars galaxy.
I watched an interview with one of the developers and he explained that they wanted the new game to 'look' like a big space battle scene you can see in the star war movies.

Well the only development from Ironclad is Rebellion, an expansion. I don't think you'll see a whole lot of changes in terms of graphics. Really the Sins engine is pretty decent for its age, but I could see some new graphics for a completely new engine.

If you're talking about a new SW spaceship game, then there's no news on that. I'd expect there won't be anything any time soon, given the lack of support from EaW.

If anything Rebellion seems to have streamlined everything a bit more.

I had only heard of it from the mod team, but they've never yet steered me wrong on gaming ideas so I'll see what it is all about

This might be old but : What? There are so many Factions within the Star Wars universe. Actually, there's more within Star Wars than there is in the Sins universe.

Well yes, there are myriad factions in SWs, Empire, New Republic, EotH, Yevetha, Ssi Ruuk, Pentastar, Zsinj, Harrsk, Teradoc, Delvardus(the many other Warlords) Hapans, Hutts, other criminal syndicates, not to mention the later ones...

I don't have it yet, but I've been reading up on strategy and watching youtube videos of gameplay, so I can't wait to get it!!

It is a good game, and it seems overwhelming at first, my advice is not to jump right into a huge map, start with something  small like a 1v1 and gradually work your way up.

All right, I will. This game is available as a hard copy, right?

Rebellion is not, no, well technically it is, but that is only the Collector's Edition and I think you need to actually have the game itself first. Everything pre-rebellion is, however. But Rebellion is basically all those games plus some other stuff. It is a steamworks game, which, whether you like steam or hate it, is the way it is.

Edit: Also, why are there two edit buttons now? It seems kind of random. Or has this always been this way and I just never noticed?

Well that stinks. Don't have steam, so I probably won't end up getting it, then. What is the Collector's Edition?

It's a hard copy, but I believe you still have to have the steam version of the game to register it, and it is really just for people who want the extra goodies that come with it, like the Kol Battleship model. Also, I'd like to add that the Steam client is free, and doesn't take that long to download, so don't worry about that if that is a barrier to playing a game you think you might like. You still have to pay for (most) games obviously though, since anything else would be piracy. Some people dislike that Steam collects information about you, but really that happens anywhere you go online these days, and its not like they steal your credit card info :p. Hell, that even happens offline, you'd be surprised to know what stores these days can figure out about you just from your purchasing habits...
