Isard gets my vote. She had a major advantage...Yet is so incompetent that the Empire never truly recovered from it until Dark Empire.

Though Borsk is close. He's basically a major reason I dislike the NR and I keep wondering why the Hell the higher ups keep him around. I'd rather shove this ambitious jackass out the airlock the moment he tries pulling a scumbag move behind my back if I was a captain in a ship and he's on it.

And Nil Spaar? ...He and his race of xenophobes that will gladly commit acts of genocide pretty much became the one race I won't miss when the Yuuzhan Vong crushed them....Hell, I wouldn't even mind if the Empire wiped them out.

Star Wars Discussion / Problems with the New Republic?
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:53:27 PM »
After a good look at both the Old EU and the New EU, my personal feelings came to this:

The New Republic is utterly incompetent after wresting control of the galaxy from the Galatic Empire. I don't like saying that since it undermines the goals of the Rebel Alliance (Alliance to restore the Republic is a name I find too silly to me) but frankly...Jesus, it's like they became a bunch of wusses overtime. I understand the galaxy is huge and the NR just came after a nasty war but good grief. Must almost every issue drive them to the brink of collapse be our plot a book series?

Old EU was mostly them slowly being corrupted which finally reached a conclusion of their downfall. New EU....They were just too naive. While it's impressive they got a much better grasp of the galaxy while Old EU had to struggle to make their claims against warlords and the occasional threat of the week, one has to facepalm that they're willing to disarm their military strength and ignore the most obvious as hell threat against them. At least the Old EU's NR has the sense to refit their military strength.

It's like no matter what, you're just going to be annoyed at the NR in general regardless of canon.

My opinion really.

Legends-wise, he was Sidious's glorified hitman, cool but at the end, nothing to truly write home about (though his dismantling of the leadership of Black Sun and killing Qui-Gon Jinn were decent highlights).

The new stuff was an interesting spin on this. He is the same glorified hitman...Who is pissed when he realizes this and try to rectify that only to be utterly insignificant compared to the bigger picture at hand. Like he believes himself to be this great threat upon his return but at the near end of his life...He was nothing and one guy, his own personal nemesis who long stopped caring about their rivalry for years now  cared when he died.

What Han said was funny but woefully inaccurate. The Empire united as it was is simply too much. There is a reason why the Rebel Alliance were too hesitant to do full open warfare despite the growing support of their forces.

And before anyone says anything about how the Rebels won despite the odds so the Vong should win since they in turn beat the New Republic...Please think of how absurd that logic runs. The Rebels and the Vong are very different in how they fight and likewise the New Republic and Galactic Empire are two different beasts. You simply cannot compare and make assumptions base on that. So for the love of pete, do not assume the Vong would know the Empire's weaknesses the same way the Rebels do.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Greatest Warlord, who is it?
« on: March 29, 2017, 02:54:46 PM »
Thrawn, he united the IR and showed the NR a proper war.

I respectfully disagree. Thrawn didn't carve out his own territories nor did he had ambitions of his own. He simply came to unite the Imperials to a common goal and get them back on track. He just wasn't a Warlord or split off from the IR for his own ambition.

Zsinj gets my vote because frankly...He was the one Warlord where both NR and IR gave a real damn about to warrant a quick team up before Zsinj became too powerful.

Kaine again is close if because his group lasted long and grew powerful...Yet that same safety net made him unable to commit to full out fighting.

Form V for me, as the overall style is straightforward and devastating once mastered. While the lack of agility would be hampering...I honestly wouldn't mind given both its ability to counter against blasters with Shien and Djem So's focus on saber duels.

Hiltwise, I'd take an Anakin/Vader type, not too fancy but gets the adjustments to get the job done.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Character Study Ardus Kaine

I like this. It's quite ironic that the what he did regarding his decision not to strike at the NR was both his rise and fall. He didn't become like most of the Warlords picking fights for territory that could consume his vast resources, nor did he strike at the NR at which they didn’t see the Pentastar Alignment as a priority. Staying away from the fight really helped his rise.

Then...It slowly began to bite him. He had the power but he refuse to really commit when it counts. The PA is strong but it never went far than what it has. Only when pressured does he fight but that only made him a target that the NR decides to pull the trigger to lead his death. With that, the Alignment is just directionless until it was absorbed into the IR. It's quite the story of a man who could make it big...But he just didn't think he should despite the power he's gained.

I enjoyed the film, as it offers something very different than the usual Jedi/Sith conflicts.

Plus, seeing the Rebellion as willing to dirty their hands and the conflict not being too black vs white was a nice touch.

Going with Zsinj. There's a lot to be said when the reason his faction got wiped is that both NR and IR opt to work together before he really did some damage with his vast resources. The other Warlords tend to sound more like tough to take out scrubs the NR kinda go meh about they face them off at times than a serious threat with their biggest disadvantage is an inability to really work together in the long term.

And agreed about Kaine...He really doesn't scream Warlord to me.

I really can't say the NR is to blame for the Warlords. If anything, this is on Palpatine. The structure of the overall Empire always centered around his benefit and his death in Endor has shattered this as this gave an excuse for many of these warlords to finally strike out on their own.

And again, the NR senate quickly grew to something I kinda loath as time went on for them as more and more of the heroes who made it possible would eventually phase out of being part of the politics as a whole and being replaced by people...Who are more or less a bit more self serving. The New Jedi Order books made me greatly dislike the overall leadership of the NR during the Vong Wars (though the military that do fight I still respect because they put a lot on the line to fight this new enemy) and I was slightly glad they reformed into something past this (of course, then the GA suffers its own problems but lets just not delve to that). But the early NR days were rough but they kept the good fight so I can respect that.

If anything, both Republics new and old has taught viewers...The Galaxy is wayyyyy too vast and I can imagine loads of Game of Thrones levels of deceit and manipulations going about among the Senate when things got too ugly for them.

In a sense, I can see the direction of the New Canon NR. They're sick of fighting, we get that. We've seen two galactic scale conflicts that ruins lives and changed everything for many of the participants of these conflicts for bad or good. They're also not as stupid as to completely get rid of their military might (as Leia wanted them to use) but they just don't want to be the ones to pull the trigger towards a obvious enemy that is preparing to strike them until it's too late. I can see this as a wake up call that they have to respond to this act of war but with the senate destroyed and the fleets decimated, this is gonna be a lengthy war once again.

I admit, Thrawn at the end point of his life has pretty much embraced the pure ruthlessness of the Empire. Unlike Palpatine, the man plays the leadership card a lot more carefully, as while he did see how effective Palpatine's leadership was he still is well aware of the things Palpatine does that contribute to his overall downfall. Course, he's not immune to his problems of dismissing small threats that later bit him in the ass...much like Palpatine.

I always felt like Thrawn Trilogy Thrawn is much like the later younger portrayals of him in terms of his overall skills...Only except under Palpatine's influence to the point  Thrawn is a heck lot more ruthless and a lot more willing to discard his noble traits.

I mean the Empire of the Hand is a lot more lenient and less atrocity making but it still kinda has elements of the Galactic Empire. These guys joined to make results that mattered. Parck, Fel, the Hand of Judgement, the 501st, etc know what they signed up for because it's the Empire without all the moral baggage the Empire is saddled with thanks to Palpatine's ego. But that doesn't really they're gonna play nice.

Heck, I have more respect for Pellaeon for the fact he saw Thrawn's brilliance, but is aware of how the IR needed to change if it wants to survive. And of course, stayed the hell away from dark side crap once he got the reins of leadership unlike Thrawn (who does learn the lesson that keeping that sort of power around is a bad idea but damn). Because results or not in a pretty grim situation , the dark side always has that taint that ruins people in the overall long run.

Very nice choices.

I admit while growing up, one of the earliest Star Wars comic (and first exposure to the EU) I got to read was Crimson Empire. There was when I saw Kir Kanos, the last Royal Guardsman under Palpatine's rule.

And he is one of my favorite Imperials before I got to check the EU. Because the comics depict the guy as a rather heroic figure when it does and his backstory invokes a good amount of sympathy (his training, how he became the last guardsman, etc). The only thing was...When Crimson Empire started, he's a full blown loyalist to Palpatine.

It's not like Pellaeon and a good several Imperials who do believe in keeping order in the galaxy (and they are loyal to the Empire's goals, not exactly to Palpatine himself...And for sure not into Sith related messes that the Empire tends to skirt the line from when Palpatine is at the helm) and can move past Palpatine's rule. Kanos however doesn't really care about the Imperial Remnant or their attempts to hold on to whatever power they got left after Dark Empire, nor does he care about the Warlords.

All this guy cares about is slaying the traitors who made sure Palpatine stayed dead before the heroes landed the finishing blow. Granted, overtime does he admit that Palpatine is evil and that the Empire of old that he served isn't exactly noble but my god does he cling to his goals to avenging this Sith Lord no matter what.

Star Wars Discussion / Favorite Imperial Characters?

I think it's a safe thing to say that while saddled with being the antagonist role, the Galactic Empire has a slew of interesting characters regardless of moral alignment.

So I ask, what are your personal favorites? I'm thinking of anyone who isn't an defector to the Rebel Alliance like Crix Madine (badass as he is for creating the Storm Commandos) well...They're not really imperials anymore.

Zsinj does stick out for me since he just felt like a guy with a lot of vision that with his power doesn't feel that far off from getting. That and his sense of being slightly different than most Imperials (really, I thought the whole Raptor thing was pretty neat and felt that was something that only he can do).

And of course, his whole shtick of being quite dangerous despite how one look of him says otherwise. Iron Fist is a rather awesome name for a flagship as well.

...Damn, just about everything bout the guy makes me love him and saves the guy of his initial portrayal in the courtship of princess leia (cause...I just don't like the book...And probably explains how much I despise the Hapans)

I admit, Imperials just have some of the best looking ships with the firepower to match.

Super Star Destroyers, ISD II, Praetors, ...Yeah, they kinda have it all.

Though I wouldn't mind a Providence class or a Mon Cal Cruiser.

Star Wars Discussion / Things you personally like in the new canon?
« on: August 08, 2016, 08:48:58 AM »
It's been quite a long while as this canon brought upon new material so I felt this might be the best time to bring up this question...What is to you the best things bout this new canon?

I mostly mean the newer things, not just the new canon allowing moments of the old EU to bleed into the story though we can answer that too. XD

To me, just giving Tarkin a fleshed out backstory. We get mostly pockets of info regarding this guy back then and it's usually how mustache twirling evil he is (and Daala) but the Tarkin novel was to me a great way to explain just why this guy became a Grand Moff....cause the man earned it.

I admit, I like the fact not only is the character canon, but they kept the traits of what made the guy such a favorite (that being a well cultured military badass who is not like other Imperial officers). Like Xizer mentioned, it won't be the same (really, it'll be an impressive stretch to add his forming of the Empire of the Hand on there) but it's good enough. Gives a little confidence that Disney is feeling a lot more open on using bigger parts the EU than just smaller elements of it (like their take on the inquisition). Not much now but it's a good start.

I do agree about the Imperials and how they are portrayed as rather incompetent faceless boobs who are made to miss shots and killed rather easily by the heroes in the films or having mass fighters that can't take a hit with rather limited weapons compared to a shielded beast like the X-Wing. Basically anything that can be told rather positive about them is mainly EU works (when you got Soontir Fel showing that those Ties can be dangerous when in the right hands and the Hand of Judgement being shown as actual people with noble goals that can kick serious ass with the training they got).

The Official Imperial Handbook guide with comments written by Rebel military leaders (and Han) are rather amusing but it's a mixed bag. As sometimes they snark on it or do make note that they really had no chance in a pound for pound battle against the Empire (hence their hit and run strategy). Three things that really made me chuckle is:

1. Leia's rather out there comment on AT-STs and how to blow one up with ease. Han's reaction is priceless.
2. Han's comment on the Imperial Royal Guards and the rumor being that they are never killed in battle. In short, he says that line has to be total BS
3. Again, Han noting the specs of a Imperial Garrison and telling Madine to have Rebel troops see him for advice on how to infiltrate one since he has done so in the past. Madine...Doesn't believe him.

Star Wars Discussion / Lightsaber Gimmicks?
« on: September 08, 2015, 10:46:43 PM »
Heyo, it's been quite some time and looking back at all of Star Wars, from old to fairly recent works led to my thoughts on this topic.

And that's bout numerous variations of the lightsaber and ones opinion regarding this.

To me...It's really a hit and miss thing.

The lightsaber was established as an elegant yet dangerous weapon, able to do as much harm to the user should said user not receive the proper guidance. It was a pretty cool thing, a laser sword able to cut nearly everything it touches. It's pretty unique as it can be.

But as time went on, the standard lightsaber would give rise to other types of weapons that follows the same basics (aka the beam of light that cuts nearly everything) with a few major changes that the prequels more or less helped gave a rise on this topic that older works did introduced but were rather obscured at the time.

The double bladed lightsaber, a little confusing as to how to use it without causing accidental self harm with a few glaring weaknesses but it was still cool when Darth Maul brought it in the big screen.

Curve hilt lightsaber? Again, seems confusing but after looking at Dooku's fighting style, it kinda helps make it passable.

And then I looked up other stuff and find out about the Lightwhip...Which I just don't find appealing to me. Lightsabers with longer hilts? Well...Okay then. I guess while I don't really see the point with these types of lightsabers other than to give the users something unique (well, I do admit Lumiya's whip was pretty unique as it had multiple metal cords plus the beam), they're still weapons at the very least.

Then new canon opened this up to designs that I really don't think is needed but hey, they want a fresh audience, it's their decision.

Like Rebel's Inquistor's double bladed....Spinning thingy? A lightsaber with a built in gun? ...The crossguard saber? Hell, how bout the darksaber (or whatever they call that black bladed saber)?

I felt like new canon is trying a tad too hard on a weapon that was already kinda cool.

Well, enough rambling on my part (), opinions on this recent trend?

Kaine really gets my vote as he more or less did the most success of securing his power and unlike the others, it wasn't picked apart from the other factions, and even his death didn't really diminish the strength he build up in the Alignment in my feelings over the matter.

Though the PA would eventually be annexed by Pellaeon into the IR, Kaine still has that respect in that his homeworld is now the IR's official capital. Zsinj may be an impressive SOB that required an enemy mine situation to tear down his power, but you don't see his homeworld being the capital of a powerful government.
