We've discussed a lot about Iraq. now a new conflict that includes one of worlds superpowers has begun. what do you think? will it escalate? how will other countries react?
-
i don't really know what to think. as always, russia shows a tremendous amount of anti-west bias in attacking Georgia, a pro-west country over a couple of miniscule breakaway states being attacked. however, my sympathy leans towards georgia in that it's just trying to deal with the problem of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, 2 millitant forces who have attacked georgia on countless occasions and are destabilising the country.
my opinion on kosovo differs in that kosovo did little to destabilise serbia, and was diplomatic about it.
millitant breakaway states don't deserve independence.

I must not be watching the news if i havnt heard about this. wat were the reasons of the attack

This isn't going to turn into another US vs Russia debate

I think it will probably wind down pretty soon, Georgia did it probably hoping noone would react, but now that Russsia went in so strongly and quickly to protect South Ossetia, Georgia will probably have to back down and retreat
-
georgia propably though that russia wouldn't react to their doings in south-ossetia. especially with that kind of speed and military power.
-
Russia was probably wanting a fight
-
I more or less have to agree with Russia on this. They're just trying to protect the Russian citizens, South Ossetia shouldn't even be part of Georgia. However, all the stuff they're doing beyond South Ossetia is wrong, so its a good thing peace talks are starting...
-
I hear Tom Clancy has already purchased the publicity rights of this conflict.
-
ironically, the first splinter cell game was based in georgia near south ossetia i believe.
-
oh, well i heard u.s. is talking to russia to start negotiations. my opinion is u.s doesnt tell russia how to run their little war and they dont tell the u.s how to run their iraq war
-
we're not telling russia how to run their war, we're telling them to stop it. The US got approval from the UN for the Iraq War, so it's a little differnt.
-
I say right on Russians, having to take a vote to defend your own people and a friendly country is just retarded, they went out to get things done.
-
now after georgia offered peace and claimed troop withdrawal russia bombs their capital, just great just brilliant......
-
In this, i think both sides are as bad as each other.
I really dont know whether to believe the statements made by either Georgia or Russia about troop movements, cease-fires, etc.
-
Now it appears Russia is going a little too far, but maybe not, it would appear i was right that Russia wanted a fight
-
russia is, at least it claims so, supporting two areas that have declared independence but that no coutnry has recognized. and it seems that those two areas are happy that russia came to intervene.

Russia 'ends Georgia operation'
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to military operations against Georgia, the Kremlin says.
He told officials he had taken the decision to end the campaign after restoring security for civilians and peacekeepers in South Ossetia.
This is good. It'll show the Georgians that the kind of action that they have been taking in South Ossetia won't be tolerated, and since Russia stopped after just taking those areas that should have been independent in the first place it shouldn't cause as much international bullshit as it looked like it was going to.

to be honest, i fail to see what right russia had to attack. south ossettia is NOT russian territory. at the most, it is a breakaway state of Georgia. At the least, it is a part of Georgia.
Here's a comparison of their armies.
GEORGIA
Total personnel: 26,900
Main battle tanks (T-72): 82
Armoured personnel carriers: 139
Combat aircraft (Su-25): Seven
Heavy artillery pieces (including Grad rocket launchers): 95
RUSSIA
Total personnel: 641,000
Main battle tanks (various): 6,717
Armoured personnel carriers: 6,388
Combat aircraft (various): 1,206
Heavy artillery pieces (various): 7,550

it's overkill.
however, Georgia should try to solve it diplomatically, perhaps devolving power.
-
georgia attacked russian peacekeepers and south ossetian militians. of course russia intervenes. and I'm not so sure that those numbers are accurate. and if you want to speak about overkill look at the Iraq war.

Less than 1/3 of the citizens in South Ossetia are ethnic Georgian, and most of the region's population hold Russian citizenship. Also, as part of the '92 settlement Russia supplies some of the peacekeepers in the region, surely that gives them the right to enter the territory?
-
and what about Abkhazia?
i fail to see their right in intervening there, although you may have a point in south ossettia.
-
if the news is to be trusted russia is pulling out ;)

It never said Russia sent ALL of their troops. Over half of the South Ossetians hold Russian citizenship. Back in 1992ish S.O. had a referendum to separate from Georgia and it passed with a clear majority, but nothing was done about it and Georgia's used military force to make them stay. Russia only attacked Georgia after Georgia attacked South Ossetia.

Russia led the peacekeeping mission there too.

to me, this is just russia wanting more pissing grounds. the same thing happened with china and tibet and stuff.

This really has nothing in common with China and Tibet.....
-
tibet wanted to be it's own country. and china went in, with military, and said no, despite the fact that china is already huge and really doesnt need anymore land. Now Russia is doing the same thing to georgia because they dare not want to follow russia still slightly communist ideals. it seem's marxism dies hard.
-
actually the conflict began when georgian troops marched to south ossetia which has declared it's independence.
-
Tibet was sitting there all peaceful with their monks, Chinas attack was unprovoked. Georgia attacked a country and Russia went in to defend it, it has little to do with Tibet and China.
-
Russia is refusing to speak with the current Georgian government, despite the French and Georgian attempts at peace negotiations. Russia moving in to Georgia isn't the true problem. What will Russia do NOW is. If they continue their stance, that means they want a pro-Russian (and, considering the fact that Putin use to be the head of KGB, communist) puppet government to take over, or the entire region part of Russia. Either way, they would have gained control of the last natural gas pipeline that side of the black sea. Do you really think that fact would have passed Putin's mind?
-
This is confusing! We are talking about russsia and georgia and then it we r talking about china and some other country. wats the topic

Read the title, thats the topic......
