Title: Know Thine Enemy
Post by: Revanchist on April 29, 2014, 01:46:20 AM
I believe it was Sun Tzu who said "know yourself and your enemy and you need not fear the outcome of a hundred battles." With that in mind, I finally started FTGU as the NR. Just captured Fondor, actually. That being said, I have some questions/comments about the NR as a whole so far.

As I go I will probably be asking more questions.

  • There are several ships I am not sure are worth my buying, though. The Sacheen, for example: what is its use? What about the Corona?
  • I really want to like the MC-40, but I just can't see their use. Somebody prove me wrong.

  • Also, I have heard negative reports about the Majestic. As it is IMO a pretty neat looking ship, what exactly is the problem?
1. The sacheen isn't a great unit but you use it if a CR-90 is useless in battle if you need to take down corvettes rather than fighters and because of its Defender squadron which gives you help if you are attacked by fighters.
2.The corona is a light carrier so you can drop it in battle but unlike the Quasar (which isn't in the corona's era)it has 1 less fighter squads it's fighters are slightly weaker and the corona has better firepower.
3.The MC-40 is a very good unit but it is 3 pop which I really don't think it should be this puts it with competition with Victorys, Munificent and Chaf destroyers rather than 2 pop ships like the strike cruiser, Dreadnaught and the Nuruodo frigate.
4. The Majestic at one point had no fighters (before 2.1)and had little firepower compared to mark I star destroyer the problem with that was the MC-90 which could take on Mark I and made Mark II's a run for their money.

I hope this clears your queries.

It does, thanks. As to the Majestic, the description says it had long-range weaponry. How does this translate Ingame? I could see myself using them if they had Praetor-esque range attacks.

Played some more yesterday, finally am pumping out some capital ships. Current thoughts/musings:

Yeah, the MPTL was great in vanilla but is kinda outclassed here. AACs are much better--they're cheaper, faster, shielded, can gun down infantry at close range, can take on aircraft, and are every bit as powerful.

BACs are pretty much the NR's best non-capital. As far as capitals go, do not underestimate the MC80b. Pretty good value. Build some 90s too, but the Nebula is definitely their best ship.

Third play session today; built a Viscount. Time to win this game. Thoughts:

I am now beginning to split my fleet up into two attack forces. One I shall name Mon Calamari's Might: it shall be made up solely of the Viscount, MC-80Bs, MC-90s, and MC-40As with corvette support. The other shall be all New Class warships (Endurance, Nebula, Majestic, Sacheen, Corona, BAC).

I'm not a Tracker fan either. It does have Sensor Ping, which is useful for knocking out a power generator (send V-Wings to actually do it). Their transport role can be filled by HTTs, which do the job without cluttering the ground (and, IIRC, can carry light vehicles too). A situational unit, I would say. Same with the T-1B and T-2B. The T1's flak cannon is better at AA than the AAC, while the T2 has better shielding and is overall not a bad unit to mass, but neither packs overwhelming heat. Elsewhere, the NR doesn't have that strong of a ground lineup.

The Tracker can carry light vehicles too. Being a PA user I like the Tracker as it is similar to the Floating Fortress. It doesn't draw too much aggro, though, and is decent against vehicles when supported by RAFs and V-wings.

The problem I find with the Majestic is lack of weapons, Shields are great but the few heavy turbo lasers and ion canons make them ideal for taking ships like frigates head on. But I would never take on a capital ship with one or two though, Maybe a victory but that's it.
