Yhea X-Wing with more rapide fire during a large amount of time without "overheating" or running out of energy.
And tie go fazter with more powerfull lazer wich pozzezz a bit more "rapid" rapid fire than the Rebel one.... But Run out of energy quicly.

I Love TF and XWA But TIe fighter againzt XWA I don't like it too much......

Nono Y-Wing V.Z gun boat. One iz a bit fazter and agile and have imperial lazer. But Light zhield wich regenerate quicly.
The other iz zlow but have a good hull, rebel lazer ---> A good rapid fire during a large amont of time. biefier zhield medium capacity but have the regeneration of the YT-1300 zhieldz without the power of the YT-1300.

I wish the re-release of the original X-Wing had included the UI upgrades of TIE Fighter and XWA.... the UI in X-Wing sucked big time and it made the game way harder than it already was... which is saying a lot

True.  Bet they're about equal in performance, being mostly useless.  The LAF is a good 66% faster top atmospheric speed than the Pinook though, so given the lack of hard numbers for the LAF, I imagine the Pinook will actually manage to come out worse if you were to go head to head in the BATTLE FOR ULTIMATE INFERIORITY!!!

The only battle where losing means you win.

LAF-250 is pretty darn useless. Even worse, it was designed by one of the so-called finest shipbuilders in the Galaxy and produced in large numbers before realizing its pathetic uselessness.

If you include uglies, yes, even more pathetic than the Pinook fighter.  However, of factory produced, I think you'll have a hard time coming up with something more useless than the Pinook.

Pinook Fighter.

I knew someone would rise to the challenge.  :)

And I'd forgotten the Pinook - yes, that thing is crap.  Z-95, though, I'd say is still significantly better than a TIE/ln - heavier firepower, shields, still fairly close in speed and maneuverability.

TYE-Wing, also known as DIE-Wing, surely deserves a mention.

The really crappy one from X-Wing Alliance? Sure beats my pick.

Yup, that's the one.

IIRC, in X-Wing series games X-wings and TIE fighters both cruise at 100 units, with X-wings able to outpace TIEs significantly with all power going to engines since the x-wings have shield power to divert as well as laser power - even Interceptors (cruise 111) are outpaced by the X-wing that way, I believe.  A-wings clock around 120 in cruise, TIE Avengers around 133 and Defenders 144.

Of course, in reality in space speed is an entirely relative term - you'd measure acceleration rates rather than max speed when comparing vessels, but I figure we can approximate those from the game speed figures.

Honestly, though, the only thing the basic TIE fighter excels at is being cheap enough to be disposable - you'll be hard-pressed to find another Star Wars fighter that wouldn't be an overall better ship.

Pinook Fighter.

I'm more imperial !!!!!
But if I had to chooze between a Tie and a X-Wing I will take teh X-Wing Tie = zuper manoevrable thiz iz amazing + 120 battle zpeed. Powerfull energyvore lazer wich over heated quicly.... No hield no hull.

X-Wing A wonderfull rapide fire, zhield, 70/90 battle zpeed, hyperdrive, manoeuvrable....

But if you take rebel, don't expect any azziztant the primary force of the rebelz are their ztar fiighterz !!!! Zo you have to do all the job !!!!

Perhaps. While an NR partisan myself, I usually found it hard to root against Imperial characters I genuinely like, most of all Pellaeon, who really is a good guy just doing his job.
(Seriously, I wonder why some of these guys didn't just jump ship once they saw what the Empire they served had become.)

Quite so.  Even a character like Kirtan Loor, if written well enough (and he was), can be a somewhat sympathetic one.  As to why those like Pellaeon didn't leave, it was I think fairly simple - while they thought that the Empire was doing sometimes questionable things, they viewed the idea of returning to "democratic anarchy" as worse (many of these people being old enough to remember the Clone Wars and the Old Republic's systemic weaknesses).  For the Hand of Judgement, that was the explicit reason they didn't hook up with the Rebellion after leaving the Empire, and instead simply continued enforcing the law and weeding out corruption on their own.

Oh, and http://www.moddb.com/mods/star-wars-the-original-trilogy-mod is a WIP Freespace 2 Open Star Wars mod that gives a small taste of what we could have if they ever decided to make a new X-Wing style game.  Only a handful of missions, and they're far from fully fleshed out, but if you want a half hour or so of Star Wars combat with fairly modern graphics and very hectic combat...
