Yeah. All of the prior-Expanded Universe canon has been rebranded as Legends, and is now separate from the new coordinated Canon (which includes all the movies, the Clone Wars and Rebels animated TV shows, and novels/games/comics being released from April 2014 onwards). That doesn't mean characters, locations, technologies or events from the EU can't or won't reappear in the new canon, just that they have to be explicitly brought in/referenced through the new media.
in terms of technological developments re: X-Wings and TIE Fighters in the new trailer, the SW galaxy really does seem to have reached a development peak. How long have lightsabers, hyperdrives, repulsorlift generators and turbolasers been around? 1,000 years, 10,000 years?
Just using a couple of examples from the Expanded Universe:
- the Dreadnaught Cruiser was designed at least 80 years prior to the Clone Wars and was still in demand in 10ABY (Katana fleet) - that's 115 years.
- the Millennium Falcon was built in 60BBY which makes it over 80 years old by the start of the Vong War.
And just going from the movies themselves (all three trilogies), R2-D2 and C-3PO are both at least in their late 60's (32 years between TPM and ANH, four years between ANH and ROTJ, 30 years between ROTJ and TFA) - not bad for a couple of droids that have been at the centre of galactic affairs for three generations!
