EotH - canon and original units
« on: January 09, 2016, 10:21:16 AM »
I read in another thread that Corey said he wanted to keep the unit rosters to the canon of the Legends EU, the exception being Empire of the Hand where the team had to come up with original designs. So I'm wondering if I could get a list of which units are canon and which are original. So far, I've identified the following units as canon:

Houshold Phalanx
Airstraeker
Nsiss Clawcraft
Ascendancy Star Destroyer

And that's it! As for the heroes, the only one I've not found any mention of is Siath. So where does the inspiration come for the rest of the Hand's arsenal? Also, I presume the Brask is based on Brask Oto from Survivor's Quest, is this correct?

Not quite correct. The Nsiss Clawcraft is the only unit which is canon, both name and design. The Airstraeker has a canon name and function, but no design or any really specific description. The Ascendancy Star Destroyer is not canon, if anything the Chaf class more closely matches the description of the "Chiss Star Destroyer" mentioned in the books. The Brask is named after the Brask Oto base thing, but that's about it.

The inspiration for most of the Hand's ships, specifically the ones we call Sycan designs (Phalanx, Syndic, are actually a mix of the Hammerhead from Kotor and General Grievous (the exposed plating stuff).

I did notice that similarity with the Hammerhead, especially in the earlier versions

The old Phalanx design was very similar to the hammerhead

Certainly more than the new model.

In that case, how is the canon split between names and designs? Am I right in thinking Ashik's ship is based on the Chaf Envoy?

Fel Ascent (which is, as of Ascendancy 1.0, identified as a member of the Frontier-class) is meant to be a somewhat smaller take on the Chaf envoy, yeah. The Chaf Envoy is the only real source we have for what Chiss designs would look like, so  we lean pretty heavily on that.

Pretty much as far as canon goes for Empire of the Hand or Chiss Ascendancy vehicles and ships, we have:
- Chaf Envoy: known name, function and design. In Ascendancy 1.1, and serves as a basis for Frontier class in both Ascendancy and ICW
- Nsiss Clawcraft: Known name, design and function. Serves as the basis on which we design EotH fighters.
- AirStraeker: Known name and function, designed by us.
- Chiss Defoliator: Artillery piece in the b ackground of the Battle for Tenupe painting thing. Not in the mods at present.
- Chiss APC. Doesn't really tell us much, except the Chiss have some form of APC with a maser cannon on top.
- Chiss Star Destroyer: We know they adopted the Star Destroyer design, we know one was about a kilometer long, and we know they tended to lack the same command bridge structure that the Imperial Star Destroyers had.  This became the basis on which the Chaf and Ascendancy Star Destroyers were made, along with their other star Destroyer-looking ships, but all names, stats, etc were designed by us.

Everything else- names, designs, roles, classes, whatever, were designed by us based on what we think is reasonable for them to have had. Everything we try to do for them fits within the canon, as opposed to contradicting it. For a while it was actually difficult to find the canon information on them since people started trying to post our stuff on wookiepedia...

The tripod thing? Totally not come across that one before!

I always figured the APC was the thing in the picture from the Essential Atlas.

I think that's civilian. It doesn't seem like it can fit many soldiers, and it lacks the maser turret.

I like how you say the defoliator is not in the mod at present, do you have any plans to incorporate more of these canon units? I'd also like to point out that Crisis of Faith gave the Empire of the Hand the A-Rack, described as a 3-wheeled A-shaped vehicle with an e-web on top and carries 5 troops on either side. Since it's described as a frame with the troopers clinging to it, I imagine it's akin to a buggy like this, but larger:

That could make a cool infantry transport unit for the Empire of the Hand, something they're currently lacking.
