Visvia Vs a Praetor II
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:11:38 AM »
I remember back a while ago I brought up that the range on the Visvia seemed short.  At that time I was told that almost all ships and stations have pretty much the same range with a couple specific exceptions for the large ships that have maneuvering difficulty.   Now I realize that its reasonable that the ships that can't maneuver very well in game have longer range or they wouldn't be able to bring much of their firepower to bear at a time.  By that same logic though, shouldn't a station which is by its very nature, unable to maneuver at all have range at least equal to one of the most common attack ships built  in later era's by two different factions?  Perhaps its just me, but I felt my Visvias were just a drain of resources after my fifth one got demolished without being able to fire a single shot just because the attack fleet consisted almost exclusively of Praetors.

I guess I am just trying to see if anyone with a dissenting opinion can give me a good reason for them to be so easily out-ranged.  Is this a problem for the Golan defense platforms also?  I pretty much only play EoTH so I haven't noticed an ability to out-range stations with any of my ships, but I don't have Praetors.  If this is a problem for defensive stations of multiple factions, is there any reason not to increase their range?

Yes, Golans are also outranged by Praetors and SSDs, though the surface-to-air weapons of the other factions mitigate this a good deal - weaker defenses are the main weakness for the EotH.  Of course, you've got some of the best units in the game and super-fast retreating to compensate you for this.

Also, I believe Praetors are intended to have extra range compared to their size, because else they're actually not that great a ship compared to their pop/credit costs.

Brask should be the battle station of your choice on any border planet facing the PA. Add some carrier support and you can deal with all but the worst Praetor invasion fleets (not counting Enforcer swarms that are a pain to deal with regardless of your fleet composition).

Now, to make everyone's jaws dropped I present you:
1 Vic II and 2 Dreadnaught kill 2 Golan III and a Light frigat shipyard without getting one hardpoint down.
Actually, most of the ships can do that just fine. there is a very narrow line, where almost every larger ship(quite relative what we consider larger) can outrange golans. only a few of the ships weapon systems can shot at the golan, but that's enough as the Golans are slowly losing their shields, and after that hardpoint by hardpoint.
The trick is: give the ship the command to attack Golan, wait until it's weapons start to fire, and press the stop button the exact same moment. DONE
The guns will keep firing, but the ship is not going any closer. Enjoy. It really takes a lot of time, but it can be managed.

This is actually the way to fight just about anything that's anywhere CLOSE to equal.  THe AI loves to BONZAI!!!!!  and charge into melee range rather than staying near the limit of weaspons range.
