I think it depends on the time, after Yavin, Rebels had the better morale, after Hoth their morale was shit

If the empire hadn't turned to warlordism I think they would have beaten the rebellion even when the emperor died.

Alot of the "GA"s were similar to the commanders that fought each other.

Thrawn would have beaten ackbar if he hadn't been killed by Rukh. good luck for rebels that he killed Thrawn in the middle of the battle. otherwise their entire fleet would have been destroyed with the exception of ackbar and his command ship.
