Damn...I didn't see that coming.
I guess I should be sadder, but after the whole Kinect Star Wars, and 'killing Battlefront 3' thing, they were practically dead anyway.

Could this have any effect on fan mods for previous LucasArts games (e.g Thrawn's Revenge)?

The really bad new is no more 1313. :(

I guess we'll just have to settle for more Lego/Angry Birds type games from now on, rather than proper video games?

The closing of Lucasarts has no impact on us, but the basic ownership of Star Wars by Disney could. I doubt they'd stop allowing mods for the game, but in the past businesses that are really protective of their franchise, or are planning on releasing a new project have shut down mod projects, and Disney could end up taking that route with Star Wars. Microsoft shut down a bunch of Halo mods when Halo Wars was in development, and recently every Battlestar mod was given a C&D order as well.

This is truly depressing, but unfortunately not too unexpected. Soon Disney will probably close Lucasfilms itself and absorb everything from it. The question I have, though, is what will happen to all the motion capture technology that LucasArts had?

My only concern is potential bullying of mods.  If Disney wants to release star wars games in app form, then fine.  It's been done to death and won't change anything.  However, if it goes after the modding community then SW won't really have any life left.  It's actually a real money loser for them, imo.
Did you see that?  Know what that cost?  $58,000.  I mean, what a waste.  It wasn't even funny.  That's $58,000 that could have gone to curing leukemia.  Or.  muscular dystrophy.  Or... what does Michael J. Fox have?  That.  Alright, let's watch some damn cartoons.

Yeah... no. We have no intention of trying to sneak around a cease and desist order if it were to happen.

Yeah. I have better things to do than to get sued by Disney.

but i fear, the only thing we can do is wait and see what happens.
But on the other hand:
Does anybody know if there are existing mods to Disney produced games?
If that were the case there could/would be reason to hope.

I don't know of any Disney games with any sort of modding community. I do know Disney is very protective of their intellectual property, and that other companies have shut down mods for less. It all depends on how much Disney knows about it, what future games they intend to make, or cares about alienating a large portion of gamers.

And now they say that one of the games they were probably working on was Battlefront III. And that Disney had to reevaluate "the use of violence in their video games."

Star Wars is doomed.

Damn Disney to the seven Corellian Hells

Hey, it was Lucas who decided to sell. All damnation goes unto him   ;)

So this is official? I'd heard rumors that Disney was considering polishing up BFIII and releasing it to the masses...a naive hope, I guess. Frankly, there isn't a real person to put the blame on. Lucas was pushed into a corner, really, his children apparently weren't interested in inheriting the company, but then again who would want to take on that responsibility and risk destroying your father's legacy? There really wasn't anyone else he could sell it to, either. It could be worse. He could have sold it to EA...*shudder*
