Top ten commanders
« on: April 20, 2012, 06:54:27 PM »
Gentlemen in response to the TOP TEN Starfighters I'd like to do the top ten commanders of the Star Wars universe.
They will be graded by Fear Factor, Success Rate, Service Record, Versatility, and Legacy. I'd also like to hear any opinions of your own as well.

1) Grand Admiral Pellaeon
2) Grand Admiral Thrawn
3) Admiral Ackbar
4) General Garm Bel Iblis
5) General Wedge Antilles
6) Mandalore the Great
7) General Jan Dodonna
8) Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin
9) General Maximilian Veers
10) Lord Hoth

I'm interested to see you put Thrawn below Pellaeon.  Sure, Pellaeon comes out top on Service Record (70+ years in various navies) and possibly Legacy (peace between IR and NR, leading the IR through the Vong War, his role in the Second GCW, etc), but i wouldn't say he was particularly successful (he did retreat alot and lost the campaign that led to the Pellaeon-Gavrisom treaty) or terrifying.  The New Republic was far more frightened of Thrawn than Pellaeon, Thrawn frequently demonstrated his versatility in utilizing different strategies and tactics (often leading him to outstanding victories) and is the only commander that i know of to have their own simulation.

Anyhow. Like i did for the starfighter thread, im just going to pick someone i think comes top in each category:

Fear Factor:  Darth Vader.  Strictly speaking he wasn't part of the standard command chain, but he definitely inspired fear in his underlings and opponents.

Success Rate:  Admiral Ackbar.  He took a fledgling and disorganised rebel fleet and managed to turn it into a military machine capable of standing up to the Empire.  He led the New Republic through countless campaigns and battles over the course of twenty years.

Service Record: Admiral Pellaeon.  As i mentioned above, he served over 70 years in uniform through the Old Republic, Empire, Imperial Remnants and through, the Vong invasion, in the GFFA.

Versatility:  Admiral Thrawn.  Again as above.  Excellent strategist able to identify and make use of his opponents weaknesses.

Legacy:  Admiral Ackbar (again).  He devised the strategy/trap that took the GFFA into the final stretch of the Vong War.

Honourable mentions:  Wedge "so good he couldn't fail when he tried to" Antilles, Nek Bwua'tu (consistently beat the Thrawn Simulator).  Probably many others i could mention here, but they've slipped my mind.

As to why I placed Pellaeon above Thrawn for the following reasons. I do admit it's a tough call.(but it's similar to why the T-34 beat the M1A1 Abrams on the Top Ten Tanks)
Yes first off service record, two Legacy, he saved the IR from annihilation first at the NRs hands via a treaty and then from the Vong. He was a very successful tactician, though he was forced back mainly due to Daala's flawed plan in the last Imperial push, Pellaeon actually kept the campaign from complete ruin and managed a very skillful tactical fighting retreat. He kept large amounts of his fleet intact, bested Admiral Ackbar, Garm Bel Iblis and Wedge Antilles on seperate occasions. He was feared by his enemies but also respected. His fear factor was less than Thrawn's but he was more successful as he actually saved the Empire. Versatility was less than Thrawn but not by much as Pellaeon had to adapt to more change than any other commander in the SWU over the course of his extremely long career.
For individual awards as just judged by sole criteria below:

Fear Factor: Thrawn(considered by the NR to be a super weapon of sorts)
Success Rate: Admiral Ackbar(In spite of seemingly walking into every trap devised by Imperial Leaders for years he always turned the tables or managed to get out of it and accomplish the mission and the Ebaq 9 trap was sheer tactical brilliance)
Service Record:Gilad Pellaeon(over 70 yrs of ACTIVE SERVICE)
Versatility:Wedge Antilles(Luck incarnate and leader of many campaigns and invented many starfighter and capital strategies)
Legacy: Gilad Pellaeon (again his reworking of the IR, the ships that bear his name, the peace between IR and NR among other notable reasons)

I know this is a minor nitpick, but Vader was actually the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet :p. Anyway.... as in the last thread, its all already been said!

I'll star with aquestion that who is Mandalore the Great? And using the same system as Slornie my choices are:

Fear Factor: Darth Vader, man who was feared equally by the enemy and his own crew.

Success Rate: Admiral Ackbar, battle of Endor wasn't exactly his victory in my opinion but he built the NR fleet by himself and later planneds a crucial victory against the Vong

Service Record: Grand Admiral Pellaeon, no real contest here 70+ years with numerous galactic organizations

Versatility: Grand Admiral Thrawn, he nearly brought down NR by himself with superior planning and adaptability. Bilbringi would have been a crushing victory without his untimely dead.

Legacy: Admiral Daala, I'll say Daala because it was her vision and actions that formed and later sustained the IR
I reject your canon and substitute my own!

Mandalore the Ultimate I meant. He was one of the first leaders of the Mandalorians  here is his bio.

Also if we had honorable mentions, Czulkang Lah and Nas Choka would be close.

I only really admire two "Commanders" in the SW universe and it's Revan and Meetra Surik. Additionally, I edited your topic and made it not composed entirely of capital letters.

Honourable mention would also be Verrack, Commander of the MC 80 Maria

served in various battles and helped bring down Peccati Syn, as well as numerous enemies at Endor, and way beyond.

He is by no means one of the greatest in history.. just in the Alliance/NR (after Ackbar, bel Iblis etc)
