A question about unit upkeep

So say my fleet is too big, but I refuse to downsize it to the point that I lose money continuously until I have non left. what happens if I can't pay unit upkeep?

After you hit 0 credits, it doesn't continue to decrease. You just stay at 0 credits until you reduce the amount you're spending.
