My Star Wars Force Awakens Review(SPOILERS)
« on: December 18, 2015, 03:28:42 AM »
I'll say it again don't read this if you don't want hella spoilers!

My Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review can be summed up in a single word: meh, and this is coming from a guy who actually liked the Prequels moderately well(minus Jar Jar). I'm starting to think this might be a unpopular opinion as all I see on the YouTube and Facebook Star Wars pages is nothing but people praising how it "restored their faith in the franchise". I mean there were absolutely some good parts, all the action sequences were great but the movie's plot is kinda atrociously bad. Its nothing but one cliche from the original movies after another, lots of plot holes and ridiculous Ex Machina(Rey can suddenly use force ex machina). I'm struggling to think what were the themes of this movie, what were its good one liners it didn't steal from the originals and what really was the point of it all anyhow? Also the First Order, especially General Hux and Captain Phasma, are some of the most one dimensional "bad guys" I've ever seen, they seem to only be evil because they're humorless, have no sense of morality and talk in a British accent. And don't even get me started on the "Starkiller Base", I predict we got at least another two Death Star like weapons coming each one bigger than the last, it literally is the trope from the EU about how the Empire just keeps making superweapons so the Rebels can blow it up. I got to say though Poe Dameron was my favorite character, he's got that rugged masculinity that everyone likes in Han in Episode 4-6. The final thing is the ridiculous amount of fan service and cheesy references to the originals, I swear they are the only things that make this even feel like a Star Wars movie. Well, rant over I'll just go back to my cave of disappointment and cry myself to sleep before I see the Force Awakens another couple times, maybe my opinion will change(probably not).

Got dragged to see it.
Did not care for it. The character development was nonexistent, the "creative freedom"  was a rip off of literally several EU stories, the villains are jokes, the motivation of Fen to just spontaneously" oh a buddy got shot...i like the other side now" is just ludicrouslyout of the blue. The First Order is just...jesus the iincompetence and Kylo Ren just comes off as whiny, annoying and spoiled.
The only strength the film had was the interactions between Han Chewie and the two newbies. Leia gets sidelined, R2 has the missing piece the whole time and NOBODY checked him in years of him just sitting there?
The main superweapon is a fusion of the Galaxy Gun and Sun Crusher...apparently the Republic is only One System now...the movie was a typical Abrams production with focus on special effects and some comedic moments that are more memorable than the entire plot.

So, it's basically EXACTLY as I thought it was going to be.  SWEET.  Glad I don't plan on seeing it in theatres.

Thank you!!! The REAL fans seem to be all saying the same thing!!

The new characters ( excluding Poe ) are SO boring!!!! Poe was the best new character. Han and Chewie saved the movie for Me. Kylo is kinda a bitch... But He does remind Me of Anakin though sooo maybe they were going for that? Idk. The plot was as others have said the same as Episodes 4 and 6 and many EU plots, blow up Death Star I, II, Galaxy Gun etc.

I would much rather have seen a movie about the EU characters and not this horrible J. J. Abrams attempt to be idk original? Was He trying to be original? Idk. Give Me Jacen, Jaina, Lowbacca, Tenel Ka, Anakin ( jr ) and the rest of the EU back PLEASE!!!!

Maybe the next one will be better... I hate you J. J. Abrams....
NO ONE LEARNS THE JEDI MIND TRICK IN 2 SECONDS!!!! Not even Anakin, Obi-Wan, or Yoda!!!! God I Hate you SO much J. J. Abrams!!!!

Yeah I've been pretty worried since everyone seems to be creaming their pants over the Force Awakens, which I think is because they have some kind of Stockholm syndrome from how much they hated the prequels and they loved all the fan service and cheesy nostalgia. I don't think the next will be much better based on how the next movies have to build upon the previous movies. Movie wasn't original at all and seemed ironically to be a commentary on the state of filmmaking in 2015, everything now is a cliche rehash of some old franchise or attempt to cash in on nostalgia value. Force Awakens really seemed like the Star Wars equivalent of Jurassic World, especially in regards to the new villain, it was just a "bigger, badder" attempt at the old villain.

I disagree about Poe Dameron being in any way interesting at all. He just seemed to be the generic hotshot pilot who can do anything.  Somehow escaped Jakku and back to the Resistance in time to get another X-Wing and save the day.  That he was the recognisable/named X-Wing pilot in the battle at the end didn't give me any more investment in that sideshow to the finale or his chances of survival.

I agree about the very sudden change of sides for Finn however - a Stormtrooper aghast at the sight of battle/callous actions of his First Order who immediately decides to jump ship and help a Resistance traitor escape and then goes on to shoot dozens of his former comrades in arms.  It doesn't ring true.  Especially with the "brainwashed from birth" thing (which I assume is essentially the same as the Clone training/flash learning from the prequels).  I was also puzzled by how he was serving on the Finalizer (seriously?) but had apparently previously also conveniently been a janitor/sewage engineer (or something not really explained?) on this planet/superbase thing.

That said I did like the reference to clones not being used by the First Order (something about whether Snoke would regret not using them?).

There is no need to insult people who enjoyed the movie by saying that we aren't fans.

And for the record, Star Wars is full of characters who manifest powers with no training, though I freely grant it usually isn't intentional.  Anakin could pod race because he could intuit a few seconds into the future as a child.  It is very strongly suggested that Corran Horn managed to project an illusion before he had any idea of his abilities, which is a more complicated power than the mind trick. Kar Vastor had no training at all, but was able to beat the snot out of Mace Windu.  Kyp Durron could navigate Kessel's mines in the dark.  Gantoris had visions, something even many trained masters can't achieve (Darth Bane, for instance, never had one despite his knowledge and power).  In fact, the more I think about it, the fewer characters I can think of that were strong in the Force and didn't manifest powers of some sort without training.

It is worth keeping in mind that the Force has no rules.  It is, as Brandon Sanderson termed such things, soft magic.  Anything is possible under the Force.  If a person does things without training, it isn't breaking any rules because there aren't any - at most it just hints that this person is actually very powerful.

First Pali relax no insult was intended I like at least 40-42% of the movie, and enjoyed it much more than Episode I. I just liked the movie more when it was called A New Hope, and had better main characters lol. Though Episode I's fight scene at the end may have been better. I liked the movie... I just wish I loved it! I mean these movies keep coming out, but I only love Episode IV and V, sooo wtf right? Return of the Jedi I almost love but I hate Ewoks soooo...

Yes those characters did do untrained Force things BUT they didn't sit there saying "Drop yer gun, and set Me free." They just DID them. Doing something  subconsciously or instinctively is one thing. Sitting there trying to do something you had absolutely no knowledge of 5 seconds ago is another. Right? Just lame...
