Star Wars Discussion / Your Most Bullcrap Star Wars Moments
« on: October 15, 2017, 02:03:36 PM »
Since we should have a more positive discussion than how stupid RNG progression is in games. Games like Payday 2 and EA's BF2 can go sod off for giving me thirty cosmetics, and a second useless weapon modification that only gives me -1 stability +1 concealment for a gun I don't use.

This thread is dedicated to the most eye rolling moment in Star Wars that makes no logical sense. Or has you screaming "BULLSHIT!" This extends far beyond just the movies, including games. Yeah this thread doesn't seem to be going in positive places. Oh well.

Please post if your example is a movie, tv episode, game, comic, book, or audio drama.

Movie: Episode 2, Jango Fett shooting his assistant.
Episode 7, Rey being able to beat Kylo Ren in a lightsaber fight.

Game: I don't remember the name but when I found out that there was a Star Wars Clash of Clans rip off I hung my head in pity.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Did Ea shoot themselves in the foot with BF2?

If lootboxes aren't pay to win because of the lack of guarantees, then they aren't a progression system either.

It's just a different form of post-release business model than many gamers prefer.  That's fair, but acting like it's pure greedy evil is going too far.

Consider - if I don't pay a penny for loot boxes for BF2, I am still going to get access to all of the DLC and post-release patches for free (had they gone with Paradox's model, I'd be paying for each piece of DLC, but I'd have all guns and cards ready to go).  Sure, I may not end up with a comparable set of cards to select as someone who drops another $60 into the game beyond the original purchase, but I'm also able to access 90+% of the same content for half the price.  When I face that guy 1 v 1 will I likely be at a disadvantage?  Sure.  It'll be the exact same disadvantage I'm at when I face someone who has spent double or so the amount of time I've spent playing the game.

How long does taking to get access to content for "free" still count as free? Month, two months, year? EA could entirely reduce credits to almost nil or inflate credit prices and make lootboxes only primarily gotten with payments.

I'd call it pay-to-save-time rather than truly pay-to-win, as you can earn the same rewards through time investment.

The advantages afforded by dropping extra cash will balance out over time as other players eventually earn the same rewards.
With an entirely RNG progression system with strength tied directly to luck on the slots, and the only way to get luck on the slots is to play for long periods of time or shell out cash, with no in game progression other than luck, and said luck definitely affecting how one preforms in a competitve multiplayer game, it's pay to have a chance of winning. There's not much to say about a situation where you can have two players of equal skill where they've invested the same playtime, but one paid for lootcrates and thus stastically is better than his counterpart in almost every way. That's the situation created here by the crates as even if extreme playtime can overcome an RNG progression system, that doesn't work as to overcome the system they need to win, which they are at a disadvantage at because other players got a few more loot crates and thus being stastically better means they win more often and at better scores.

The last time I saw this in a serious Star Wars game that wasn't trash was Galatic Starfighter where even if I was more skilled, I couldn't beat the other players due to their stastically in every way upgraded ships, and thus I kept losing, so I couldn't progress because of those losses, meaning I would never be able to match them, which means I kept losing.

Also, side note, waiting for the game to come out and a guy unboxes the same gun from 100 lootcrates, and all the crates he makes with those extra guns just keep producing the same gun, so he's stuck in a cycle of never progressing thanks to one in ten million RNG.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Is the First Order the real threat?
« on: October 12, 2017, 07:54:51 AM »
Most of my remarks are based off a partical observation of Disney's film making and marketing decisions, not the New Canon. So unless JJ suddenly (or the screne writers, R1 doesn't count) care for their EU, still going to be thinking the end of the galaxy route.

Snoke is simply an old darksider from the Clone Wars period who decided to make his own Darth Vader. I doubt he's more special than that.

As for the threat outside the galaxy, unless there's been more information about it, it's the Dark Side's host organism. The whole stupid idea the Dark Side comes from outside the galaxy, (which is xenophobic and ironic on the writer's part as heck) will probably just turn out to be some giant planet eating worm or something stupid that shoots out microscopic parasites that form, guess what, the dark side.

It's not going to be Thrawn. He's too good of a villain to be used in a movie. Disney won't use him due to their favor of humans over aliens in general. In addition he fights to win, not for life.

It won't be the Vong. Too alien to be used, still non canon, too dark for Disney (lol), and still too much focus on the FO (and the increasingly xenophobic interpretation of the new canon dark side).

I could be wrong. I'm basing all this on previous responses, I'm don't even know whose quotes you're talking about.

But either the FO going to set off Star Crusher torpedoes to destroy the galaxy to kill "the rebellion" forever, or Snoake is going to use force drain on the galaxy as his end plan, Vitiate style.

The Lounge / Re: How Do We Feel about J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Reboot?
« on: October 08, 2017, 12:01:17 PM »
I don't really like them. Not because they're far different from the previous movies but because I find the action too boring, at least in Discovery. The action of Into Darkness I like a lot more. Discovery was a solidly average movie, lot of potential, not the best execution as the plot felt a bit thin in the end. Reasoning for why pepple are shooting at each other is really the key to making an action movie I like. This was something Into Darkness accomplished, in Discovery the motivations were less impactful and didn't live up to the director's commentary.

I have conflictong feelings on it despite not being into Star Trek.

The way the plots are written are nice but the execution tends to fall flat in some cases for me. Like all of Discovery tried to be some "deep" deconstruction of Star Fleet and what we got was a generic action movie. Which was a shame.

You might be running an older version of the game. Did you defeat any major factions completely? (EotH, NR.)

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Thrawn and you
« on: September 18, 2017, 11:09:35 PM »
Well the main issue i have with him is he either has multiple personality disorder or Zahn tried too hard to retcon Thrawn into a good guy in later novels.

He's shown to be decidedly cruel to the Noghri and delighting in it. He's callous about their deaths, keeps them enslaved by deception and actually jokes about it. He has no qualms about attacking civilian targets unlike later novels and has been shown to be unwilling to give up control, seeing himself as the true Heir to the Empire. He pursues a vendetta against Karrde and Jade to the detriment of the war effort when if he'd left them alone could have prevented massive repercussions.

Contrast this Thrawn with the one from Outbound Flight or Choices of One and even the Thrawn in his last battle with Nuso Esva and you have two totally different characters.

Especially considering Thrawn's rejection of Imperial logic and instead remaining steadfast to his own believes is what gave him the tactical abilities he possessed through his naval career, and allowed the Empire of the Hand to be so successful, I wouldn't dismiss Thrawn's morality to be a thing about him that can be easily discarded.

He's a decent antagonist, unique but OP, and had a lot of cool designs and toys.

He's also a decent extremist for dealing with the Yuuzhong Vong, and has a nice mannerism of talking. The Empire of the Hand is one of the most interesting ideological factions I've ever encountered in fiction.

Sadly these two depictions don't match up. Either the subdorinate Imperial with dreams of a defended galaxy employing tactics to turn warefare in their preventative style of fighting, or the cruel mastermind seeking to reclaim the galaxy as the last Grand Admiral loyal to the Empire and willing to preform any sacrifice to do so, or any act of cruelty. Neither makes sense when paired together, and at best we get Thrawn who when allowed constructed a sound defensive Empire capable of uniting most of the galaxy, but without those freedoms engaged in any amount of dirty work to get the job done. Probably the best example of this is kidnapping the Hand of Judgement to train his own Stormtroopers, done not very idealogically but very logically.

Discussion, Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Star Destroyer suggestions

With 2.2's full release, I believe the Dues will cost more pop cap than the Imperator, giving better reasons to use one. It should also have less upkeep tied to it due to being a vastly more economical design, in addition to retaining it's ion and shield regen superiority.

I believe Corey stated in the Discord they wanted to give the NR an indictor, but needed a model or such. I don't remember it too well.

It doesn't have to make sense I guess :P, it also always bothered me that the Empire established themselves in such force and in such a short period of time after the clone wars, they could have at least added some years to it to make it more believable... meh, and who knows, maybe they found resources or allies in the outer rim or in wild space. But I wouldn't count on them ever clearing that up, it's the magic trick every evil empire ever had - unlimited resources and manpower despite being hated like nothing else ;>.
They did take half a year to reequip the Stormtroopers and reconguer the rim, and public support for the Empire was kinda high.

Finn's running through the collapsing Mega SSD, looking for his wife. He finds her standing over Ren's body. The auidiance didn't even know they were fighting.

"How did you kill him?" Finn asked. Rey's face turns into Orange Yoda.
"A good question for another movie." She replies. It ends.

A large white banner appears on screen.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Disney Star Wars cannon? Or EU (Legends)
« on: September 13, 2017, 08:08:50 AM »
Lucas made them non canon long before Disney did so they were forgotten long before Disney brought them back to life.
I wouldn't say discontinuing Legends and replacing it with Discount Original Trilogy really counts as "making them canon again." I kinda get your direction but, I doubt J.J. cares about Aftermath and such. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but I'm still rather dissapointed with Disney Canon, over all. Discounting the movies.

36
For 2.2 they've added engine hard points to SSDs.

In addition, they've seperated Palpatine and Jerec from their flagships. At least, they will be seperated, is perhaps a better term.

37
Considering they don't exist in the Legends EU and would contradict a lot of the Legends EU, they'd never even be remotely near consideration, let alone under it.
I'm not sure why I made the thread. Maybe to cope, maybe to rage. But that's also why I'm glad it's not even up for consideration.

38
Let's see. Bigger star destroyers with more firepower. Would cause engine issues considering the diminishing scale that I've seen Corey mention in terms of ship size. Already a thing thanks to PA bring battlecruiser focused.

Terrible ship designs. A cosmetic issue but a big one. Even fighting the FO would make me revolt in disgust.

Ugly looking badly designed SSDs. A shame to the legacy of the Executor.

Improved TIE/LNs. We have Thrawn with his upgraded fighters followed by Peallon, the PA is in this mod, and Palpatine has both more LNs AND stronger ones too.

"Elite Infantry." Not really since in this mod Stormtroopers are actually competent. Thanks, Zahn.

Weak heroes who are even less powerful the Air Tripwrit or whoever commands "The Corrupter" in Era 1. The only unique thing the FO has going for them. Is a weakness. Makes sense.

Obviously the Unknown Regions were full of fertile material rich worlds where they could have Nazi sex rites (Hitler's brides much?) and extract a crap ton of dura steel to build a fleet the same amount as the old Empire but everything is twice the size! After all the Unknown Regions were just empty pieces of space no one had bothered to go into and not full of "a hundred different horrors that would cause your blood to freeze if you knew about them."

By the way as your former username General Grevious?
