Star Wars Discussion / Re: Your Most Bullcrap Star Wars Moments
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:47:20 AM »
For me, basicly the entirity of the ending of Rebels.
The whole force family thing is a bunch of nonsense, and basicly the whole The Clone Wars cartoons as a Legends material.
Don't misunderstand, I like TCW, I just don't like it being part of legends.
They should have moved it into canon only, as it contradicted everything in legends.
For more detail on this see bellow:

Isn't Fall of the Republic going to consider TCW as part of legends? Will it try to resolve the contradictions?

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Strike Cruisers vs SSD
« on: April 04, 2018, 01:51:50 PM »
It would be an impressive fleet if half of them could be equipped with fighters/bombers, and the other half for ground assault. The problem would be attrition if they ran into anything which couldn't be taken out quickly with overwhelming numbers. I'm not good at micro, so my ideal fleet would be a Bellator SSD as flagship, some ISD's, and strike cruisers to act as support. Relatively fast but with enough firepower to go up against heavy hitters.

I haven't read any of the books or comics with her in them yet, but she seems pretty cool based on what I've read on Wookiepedia. She deserves to return to canon.

It's Star Wars, so meeting force sensitive hyperspace traveling space whales is just another day on the job. What I don't get was how Wedge (was it Wedge?) was able to contact them and get them to come help defeat Thrawn. Ezra was able to talk to them in season 2 using the force, but Wedge can't do that. Can I use the word arsepull on these boards?

As much as I enjoyed TLJ overall, I think the most BS moment was Leia pulling herself back to the ship after the bridge got blown out into space. I can see how she could survive the vacuum of space for a time by creating a bubble of air around herself with the force. My problem is with her pulling/pushing herself back to the ship. If that's possible, what's to stop a force user from flying around like Superman or jumping from building to building like Spiderman? Even magic needs to have some rules or limitations.

Rey beating Kylo as easily as she did still bothers even though we got something of an explanation for it in TLJ. Picked by the force to be a powerful balance against the dark side? Fine, but you still need training to learn how to harness it effectively. I'm not very excited for Episode 9 now that JJ Abrams is at the helm. The guy is too obsessed with his bloody mystery boxes and doesn't seem able to close out a story arc in a satisfying way.

So now they have stolen Grand Admiral Zaarin's project for Thrawn...

To be fair, the Tie Defender is exactly the sort of fighter Thrawn would appreciate and push the development of.

SPACE WHALES!

-Also, Jacen isn't Kanan's child, he is chopper's.

lol

The ending was too much of a Deus ex Machina for my taste, but at least Thrawn survived. I hope the OP is right and Pelleon and the 7th fleet were carried in hyperspace too. It would be ridiculous to bring him back into canon, only for him to be killed right away.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Stellaris and Thrawn's Revenge
« on: March 28, 2018, 02:29:38 PM »
The team who made Star Trek Armada 3 tried to make an ST Stellaris mod but found the developers kept pushing patches which radically change the game too often for a smaller team like theirs to handle, even with Paradox's modder friendly policy. They decided to give up and went back to Sins to start work on another mod separate from STAIII. I remember one of them said on ModDB they might consider trying again when Stellaris stops getting major updates. This seems like it will be years away, but perhaps then it would be more practical to consider making a TR mod for it.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: The Last Jedi (spoiler free)

I'm honestly surprised so much of the fandom didn't like TLJ. It's not a perfect movie, and since I started this thread, I've come across a lot of critiques which are perfectly valid. The thing I appreciated was that Rian took risks and took the story and lore into a new direction. The biggest complaint about TFA was that it was too similar to the original film, and now people are complaining about TLJ being too different. I can understand criticisms such as what was done with Luke's character, but I can also understand why Rian took him in the direction he did.

Since Disney decanonised the old EU, I wanted it to take Star Wars in a new direction, and TLJ is much closer to what I was hoping for than TFA was. The OLD EU and Disney canon exist in parallel universes in my mind. I can enjoy both.

Star Wars Discussion / The Last Jedi (spoiler free)
« on: December 15, 2017, 04:16:42 AM »
The Last Jedi opened yesterday here in Aussie land and I just got out of the theater. Wondering what you all think of it.

For my part, I've got some nitpicks which I won't talk about until people have had a fair chance to see it. Overall though, it's very good. Way better than TFA and Rogue One and up there with the original and Empire. Rian Johnson nailed it considering the material he had to work with.

Star Wars Discussion / J.J. Abrams to Write and Direct Star Wars: Episode IX
« on: September 13, 2017, 01:57:05 AM »
For those who haven't heard already:

http://www.starwars.com/news/j-j-abrams-to-write-and-direct-star-wars-episode-ix

Quote
J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.

I can't say I'm thrilled. Thoughts?

I doubt they'll bring back the Starforge, but possibly something like it. Snoke is evidently very rich so that would explain it a little. I'm guessing he was in the Unknown regions waiting to fill the power vacuum left by Palpatine's death.

The Lounge / Re: Could Japan have won the pacific war?

It's staggering how nearly everyone knew the war would be a disaster but felt it would be preferable to peaceful loss of face.

I hadn't read about this before, but it doesn't surprise me too much. Face is really important in Asian cultures, especially Confucian ones. I think it's fair to say the Japanese took it a step further with their samurai inspired sense of honour.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Disney Star Wars cannon? Or EU (Legends)
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:33:02 PM »
My suspicion is that they're going to adapt the Legends - with the Death Star at completion, the Emperor will believe that Thrawn isn't necessary for defeating the Rebels any more and 'banish' him to the Unknown Regions to explore territory for the First Order to eventually establish Empire to colonise.

I'm hoping this proves to be true, and that he ends up back with his people. I don't want to get my hopes up though given the quality of some of the stuff the story group has come up with. Let's hope business sense prevails.

Thrawn is the only canon novel I've read and I'd give it 4/5. It's got a subplot with (later to become) Governor Arinda Pryce which was kinda boring, but everything with Thrawn and his protege is great. I was only disappointed Pelleon wasn't brought back. That's not to say he couldn't be in future. Zahn apparently has several story outlines waiting for approval.

Japan bit off way more than it could chew for reasons already discussed. Had it followed a different strategy and not been bogged down in a very costly war with the Chinese, I still think the US would have defeated it in the end. Japan could not keep up in manpower and industrial capacity. Admiral Yamamoto is often considered defeatist for arguing Japan had no chance, but he was being realistic.

I'd also like to help out with testing. I've played a fair bit of 2.1 and the 2.2 demo so I should be able to help pick out bugs or anything needing attention. My modDB handle is LegionN7 with the bot himself as an avatar.

It's about time I introduced myself.

I've been playing Imperial Civil and Ascendancy for a a year or so on and off and want to help out with testing where I can.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: The Han solo movie...
« on: August 10, 2017, 12:36:51 PM »
I'm not fussed on a Han Solo movie either. Will read some reviews before I decide to go see it or not.

I reckon a movie about Darth Bane and how the rule of two came about could work. An opening title crawl is all the audience would need to get up to speed with the time period.

Star Wars Discussion / Re: Disney Star Wars cannon? Or EU (Legends)

Legends. It's much more fleshed out and has some awesome ships. That said, it's not really fair to compare the two yet imo. Legends had about 25 years to get to where it is now. There are a couple of things I wanted to bring up though.

- Thrawn is better in the canon book. I love him in legends, but he pulled some stuff out of his a** that just wasn't believable. The writers group better not have him defect to the Rebels or some crap like this. And they better not kill him in season 4 of Rebels. That show does not do him justice, and he's too good to throw out so soon.

- I'm still not sure about the whole making cyber crystals "bleed" to turn them red thing. Both sides of the argument have good points.

- Wtf would Luke choose to go into exile? It's not something he would do. I hope The Last Jedi explains this well, and I hope the wirters have the guts to with the new Jedi being grey.
