Title: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 03:11:13 AM
What is in your opinion the best MBT in the world?

Leopard 2.

Why did you forget Chuck Norris....?
Title: Re: MBTs

what has Chuck Norris to do with MainBattleTanks?
Title: Re: MBTs

He is an army on his own.... But I suppose adding him would be unfair, since nothing else would get votes...

Isn't Chuck Norris a movie star?
Title: Re: MBTs

I voted M1 Abrams. U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 11:54:51 AM
Abrams you say. I trust german quality. After all they did make the best tanks in WWII, so why shouldn't these be even better with the help of modern technology.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Raptor on August 11, 2007, 11:58:46 AM
Because Germany is now an extremely weak country. U.S.A. is the only superpower left.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 11:59:33 AM
on what basis are you the only super power left?
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: sarcronis on August 11, 2007, 12:42:04 PM
Best army, lots of nukes, overall the most powerful country on earth.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 12:46:51 PM
best army? How do you know you have the best army? lots of nukes? Russia has lots of nukes too. overall the most powerfull? USA is taking so much debts that it'll bankrupt in few decades.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: sarcronis on August 11, 2007, 12:48:31 PM
So, we have the most modern equipment.  And the most rigorously trained people.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 12:50:20 PM
modern? how do you know. usually something new is kept secret until needed. I think none of us knows nothing of the newest and propably the best weapons of USA, Russia and other major countries.

"And the most rigorously trained people."

I bet no american could survive the training of russian or chinese army. hell those dudes are treated like cattle.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: sarcronis on August 11, 2007, 12:52:06 PM
You're probably right.  But we also have the most factories that could be converted to tanks and other equipment.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 11, 2007, 12:53:27 PM
I think russia beats you on that aspect. I mean in the time of Soviet Union they build nearly all factories so that they could be transformed to produce military material like tanks and assault rifles and planes and whatever you need.

pukes raptor thats wrong but the t-90 is the best tank
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 15, 2007, 08:38:52 AM
russian quality eh? Althought I have to say that if there has ever come any good things from russia, it has to be weapons and military vehicles. I mean T-34 was one of the best tanks WWII and AK-47 is perhaps the best assault rifle in world.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Kratas on August 15, 2007, 11:10:36 AM
well t34 was the best tank at the start of the war but not in the end
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 15, 2007, 12:00:17 PM
yes it was the best in the start of the war or actuaaly in the middle of the war. but this conversation belongs to Tanks in WWII, don't you think.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 15, 2007, 01:54:13 PM
If anyhting good came from Russia it was their tanks
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 15, 2007, 02:07:11 PM
yep. and AKs
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Kratas on August 15, 2007, 03:20:50 PM
well i suppose theyre alright
Title: Re: MBTs

AK-47's?
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 16, 2007, 01:07:08 AM
great weapon. it has better caliber than NATO weapons. but back on MBTs.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Slornie on August 16, 2007, 04:05:45 AM
I'd go for the Challenger 2, since im British :P But really i dont know anything about tanks, and i cant be bothered googling to compare them.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 16, 2007, 10:17:21 PM
And unfortuneately comparing tanks is difficlt because most have little actual battle experience
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 17, 2007, 05:50:08 AM
true. I don't think any of those tanks on the list have been tested in large scale battle.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 17, 2007, 02:45:28 PM
The abrams has seen the most out of them, and then probably the Challenger
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 18, 2007, 02:21:31 AM
but neither of them has met their equals. I mean abrahms has only met some obsolete tanks.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 18, 2007, 02:22:39 AM
Exactly, no modern tank has been battle tested, although in Desert Storm like 7 abrahms took out like 100 Iraqi tanks, obsolete or not, thats impressive
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 18, 2007, 02:24:39 AM
not really. they had better training and equipment. And I assume that had a long distance between those tank groups. Witttmans achievement an Villes-Bocage is impressive.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 18, 2007, 02:26:55 AM
It was a fairly close distance fight, the abrahms were the front scout of the rest of the tank division, the actually rolled into the middle of the iraqis and didnt notice
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 18, 2007, 02:27:52 AM
Sounds like Wittmanns achievement. but he did it alone. With a single Tiger he stooped a british armor column.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 18, 2007, 02:28:51 AM
Thats not even fair though, the British didnt really have the firepower to take down a Tiger
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 18, 2007, 02:31:28 AM
but they had dozens of tanks. and they had inantry support. and they were only 10 or so meters away from Wittmann. they should have been able to kill him.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 18, 2007, 02:31:55 AM
But they didnt cause the Tiger pwns
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Meyer on August 18, 2007, 02:40:06 AM
yeah. they later killed Wittmann by bombing him with B-17s if I remeber right.
Title: Re: MBTs
Post by: Scarecrow63 on August 18, 2007, 02:40:49 AM
Very nice, probably took a million bombs to find the right target though

And it doesnt really matter if its still in heavy use, since the t-90 is the newer one, then i dont think you would consider the t-80 better

ok the T-84 should be added It used by the ukraine and the t90 has been replace for the russian by the black eagle

The Black Eagle or "Object 640" is based on a lengthened T-80U hull, with an extra pair of road wheels and a brand new turret. It appears to have very thick front armour and new-generation Kaktus explosive reactive armour on the hull and turret. The turret has a very large, box-shaped turret bustle instead of the traditional dome shape of previous Soviet and Russian main battle tanks. According to Russian reports, the Black Eagle design has abandoned the carousel-style autoloader in the fighting compartment for an autoloader mounted in the large western-style turret bustle, which incorporates a blow-out armoured ammunition compartment for crew safety, like the U.S. M1 Abrams tank. The prototype has a 125 mm tank gun, but it has been stated that it may accommodate a larger 152 mm gun [1] (compared to the 120 mm or 125 mm-calibre guns of main battle tanks in service). Due to its size, it is probably substantially heavier than the T-80, and so would require a more powerful engine to achieve the same mobility. There is debate about whether the Black Eagle will incorporate the Drozd or Arena Active Protection System.

There is still speculation whether the Black Eagle is intended for export, or if it will be fielded with the Russian Army. Some rumours persist that this may be a South Korean project, as the 152mm gun that is thought to be next generation Russian weaponry is not being outfitted on this model.

Recent information seems to suggest that the Black Eagle program has been halted due to the acceptance of the T-90 into the Russian military. This is also compounded by the fact the company responsible for the Black Eagle's design, Omsk Transmash bureau, has been in a state of bankruptcy since 2002. If it were to be offered to the Russian Army, it may be in competition with the T-95 tank, a new design with an unmanned turret.

yep. that's where I heard it too. but it can be said to be true, in my opinion. for example, french resistance were freedom fighters in their own mind and in Allies and french people. but to germans they were terrorists.

No, i doubt the Germans thought of them as terrorists
Title: Re: MBTs

and why do you doubt that?
Title: Re: MBTs

Everybody during ww2, including the Germans, were preparing home defense forces, basically resistance fighters, so the Germans knew they would face underground resistance

Title: Re: MBTs

which would have been referred as terrorist by the allies, russians at least.

Sure, the Russian propaganda center would have set that up, but during a big war like that and they strictly target the military, they'd probably have been seen as resistance

Although German propaganda said otherwise

It's been sometime since my last post, therefore, it makes no sense to post something on the actual forums right now, but this topic called my attention. I've actaully heard that the MERKAVA mk4 from the IDF is one of the best out there. Not as famous as the ones listed, but worth metioning
