It depends when. Around the time of the Hand of Thrawn Duology, the IR had 30 sectors to the EotH's 300, so I'd say EotH.

that is a bit of a #'s advantage who had better tech?

Did the IR have enough cash at that point to come up with new designs? If not, then the EotH would have the edge in tech. They were using both Imperial and Chiss technologies, so I would imagine hybrids using the best of both worlds.

hybrids of chiss and imperial are lethal. look at the claw craft. a tie cockpit, energy, engine systems with chiss flight maneuverability and weapons systems

it also depends on who is in command.

very true. if the imperials have genius commanders than they would know how to win.

I'm guessing if the two were to fight each other, Thrawn would fight with the EotH

and then I'd have to say that EotH would win.

The EOTH will win!

You have to admit that they do have the edge in tech and territory.

and it sounds like tactical genius as well.

It depends on the precise correlation between the position on the linear chronological progression, and the sum of the resources directly associated with, and accessible to each faction. :P

In the early years, the Imperial Remnant had considerable resources (later squandered by various warlords, and taken by the New Republic).  I think that these would have been sufficient to defeat the EotH.  Although the Hand had mapped out a large area of the unknown regions, it must be assumed that this also includes the Chiss Ascendancy, and areas scouted beyond the borders.  As well as this, the unknown regions were sparsely populated, so in all probability, the EotH's territorial space would only have had a few bases, shipyards, etc.

On the other hand, in the later years, when the Imperial Remnant's territory had been reduced to only a few sectors worth, with limited resources - while the EotH would presumably have continued expanding - the balance is tipped more in favour of the Hand.

In terms of tech, while the EotH did use a hybrid of Imperial and Chiss technology, there is no evidence that it was superior than that of the Remnant (dont forget, the remnant also had Daala and the research from the Maw Installation).

Note:  I have deliberately avoided any reference to Thrawn.  While his association with either faction would give them a considerable boost, his allegiance at a specific time cannot be predicted (and if it were after 10ABY, he would be dead).

yes. it would be a very even contest. Especially when you take Thrawn out of the equation.

Luke specifically stated that there were 250 sectors controlled by the Hand, as opposed to occupied sectors that they knew about, so those 250 were definitely Hand-controlled. We also have no idea how populated the unknown regions are, but it would seem to be fairly heavy. Soontir, Stent or Parck even said that they'd discovered two more species that were suitable pilots, in addition to the humans and Chiss they already had. This was also pre-Kariek, when they added a third to that. This implies that they had several other species under their jurisdiction that were not capable of piloting their ships (making the found ones more significant). Add to that that Thrawn was a military genius and their main opposition were most likely small pirate fleets (Vagaari, The Warlord, etc) and you've got some very easy territory acquisition. Either way, their 250 sectors would have around 31,250 worlds whereas the New Republic got up around 100,000.

very impressive work. Especially when it was done in relatively short time.

Alright, so they had 250 sectors by 19ABY.  What i was actually trying to say (and failed miserably) is that in the earlier years of the Imperial Remnant, the EotH would not have been as developed, or as large, and thus would have less resources.

And i thought it was the general consensus that the Unknown Regions were relatively unpopulated?  Also, Mara (or maybe Luke) indicated that there would probably only be a few military bases spread across the area.

Soontir, Stent or Parck even said that they'd discovered two more species that were suitable pilots, in addition to the humans and Chiss they already had. This was also pre-Kariek, when they added a third to that.
If Kariek was post 19ABY, why does the EotH in R1 have Eickaries? :P

Thrawn's Revenge is not official canon, obviously... And we're covering their whole known activity (up to the Vong War)  in one release, but you should know that already...

sounds like the eoth is a caged and threatened animal making them more dangerous

How so?
Title: Re: eoth vs. empire remnant

when an animal is feeling threatened, it will do untold things to defend its self

He didn't mean how is a threatened animal dangerous, he meant how is EotH like one...

ah in that case, eoth has been pushed back and encroached on for a long time. its only a matter of time before they would take try to take it all back for fear of losing their empire

Uh....the EotH hasn't been pushed back/encroached upon by anyone....
They've been constantly expanding since pretty much their inception

which was pretty much the idea whyit was set up. to explore the unknown regions.

And to beat the fuck out of the Vong.

So maybe they fought a more private war against the Vong. It was their primary purpose. So maybe they followed Thrawn's plans that he might have left and fought secretly, hence their disappearance.

could be. Problem is that we know so little about EotH. I hope Zahn would write more books about it some time in the future.
