so, since there is debate on this, i thought i would through this up.
which name do YOU prefer? name it after the named one in the movies, or the ship that was alliance flagship first?
personally, i like the Independence class, but i want to here your opinions too

I prefer Home One-Type because that's what I've known it as and also because Home One is arguably the more iconic of the two.

that's not what the debate is. Corey mentioned he wanted to call it Independence class, as do i, so i put this up for debate, but i do like Viscounts as well

But there is no debate? The class is canonically (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/MC80_Home_One_type_Star_Cruiser) the Home One type. That Independence was used first by the Rebel Alliance is irrelevant as the class long predated such use.

well, I've seen it both ways. i just feel like independence class is easier to say the Home one type, when i refer to everything else as a class

That's because most things are classes in their own right. However in the case of the MC80 class it has two named sub-types: the MC80 Home One type and the MC80 Liberty type (there's also the MC80a which thus far has not been assigned a type name).
It's really no different to the way we refer to the Katana fleet as a sub-type of the Dreadnaught class, or Crimson Command as a sub-type of the Victory II Star Destroyer (although that's purely a mod designation; in canon CC VSDs are identical to regular VSDs hull colour aside).

there is the fact that there is a lot of size and shape variation between liberty and Home one/Independence compared to VSD2/CCVSD or Dreadnaught/Slaved-Katana variation. not to mention there's like 3-6 more in the over-arching MC80 family
