I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this question but:
I recently purchased Empire at War on the new Star Wars humble bundle and I'm loving it, and I'm doing an infinities campaign as Pentastar. I have a nice little pocket empire of 6 or 7 planets put together, but the Empire is at my borders, and my probe found that they had an Executor and accompanying fleet ready to come in! I have a mix of Venators for the fighters and bombers, and Victory II as my capital ships, but I can't seem to upgrade any of my shipyards to capital to build Praetor. In the FAQ it says I may need to kill the imperial leader to gain tech, is that what I need to do in order to build capital ships? I also assume that I won't be able to build any SSD in this campaign? One final thing, I assume I have to build research facilities to upgrade my ships and vehicles, but none of my planets have the option.
If so, I will build a huge fleet of Victories and Venators and hopefully take him out, but I already lost two to a single Imperial II in a different battle so I'm hesitant to throw in my fleet of frigates. On a separate note, I'm loving this mod and wish I had this game years ago truly phenomenal work. Sorry for the noob questions but a few searches didn't seem to bring anything up. I'll probably play this one out until I get slaughtered and start again on a different campaign.

There's no traditional tech levels, killing the Imperial leader advances the era, which can change the ships you have access to. That's only in the era-progressive campaigns (the description before you start playing tells you what era the GC takes place in; only a few are progressive). Capital ships are built from capital shipyard planets, which is the level 3 station. The one you're playing, I'm assuming is From the Ground Up and not Empires at War, it's actually the hardes GC in the mod. In that one you start with a heavy frigate shipyard, so you won't be able to build capital ships until you take Ord Trasi, Jaemus or Yaga Minor (those are the closest shipyard planets, I forget which are present in that GC). The Alignment's only SSDs are two of their heroes, and there aren't any heroes in FTGU.

On a side-note:
I recommend using Praetors for heavy firepower once you have Capital shipyards.

is it my imagination, or is the praetor the ship with the longest firing range in the game? cause i have hear multiple people complain that enemy praetors just snipe their ships from half a battlefield away
-
Not your imagination, it is the Praetors most distinguishing feature. It forces you if you're facing them to attack them, you can't wait for them to come to you.

Or to send fighters at them. They are super bad vs. fighters/bombers.

ok. is this a thing to be fixed, balance wise, in 2.2? because a Praetor having a longer firing range then SSDs looks ridiculous
-
It's been changed to bring them in line with the other ships, but it wasn't done as a balance thing initially. It was done because the bigger a ship is, the more the length of the ship took up its firing range, and the more those ships end up spinning when given an attack order.

So, is there going to be a face lift for the Bothan Assault Cruiser in 2.2? It's my favorite ship and would like to know if it is going to be re-textured. I think they look a little bland and I like the BAC from Sins of Solar Empire how it has different markings on it.

Yep, we've already ported the model from Ascendancy.
-
is there any way to re-land the laats? if not now, is it even possible?
-
Tell an infantry unit to board it, and it'll land for them.
-
If I do that, will it repair while picking up the unit if next to a repair station?
