What's the point of it in the mod?

They are pretty useless, though they do carry a squadron of X-wings so I suppose there's that. I'll use the ones I start with once in a blue moon to chase antifighter corvettes around asteroid fields, but even then there are better ways to get the job done.

they really need something to make them worthwhile. the AI loves them, humans... not so much

Because they double as an early game carrier and antifighter, as well as potentially (and I use the word potentially very loosely) able to damage larger ships while having a population cost as 1.
Despite what I'm saying, I hate the marauder, and the only reason I know it's strengths is because I thought they were completely useless and sought to figure out what they could do through a series of tests.

Another potential use: cannon fodder for the SSD while your better ships sneak up behind! :angel:

but why build more if their only cannon fodder? SSDs will chew through them in seconds

I think that the marauder is next to useless. The only way I use them is to assassinate the occasional lancer. But the ship is on the same level as the gunship in usefulness

That is true. However, I still prefer CR-90s as pathfinders because generally the first units you encounter are fighters.

Seriously? I was thinking about asking for them to be toned down a bit. 35 of these plus 5 Corellian Cruisers wreck everything. You wreck monster stacks late game with a stack of 80 Marauders. Fast, one fighter, great amounts of fire in groups of 15+, cheapest carrier there is, easy as heck to control.
Give it a try on FTU. I spam these right from the start.

Sounds like you're using them as more manuverable Assault Frigates.
