Title: cannot reset direct 3d device

I keep getting a poppup that says "cannot reset the direct3d device" then it closes the game and I can't play. I get between 20 to 45 seconds in before this happens from anywhere in the game.

I use the steam version if it matters.

I already found that and googled the things they told me to google. nothing worked.

The hardware acceleration is turned on already.
