Going with the dark empire era in ICW, I would like to see The X-1 Viper droids be added. They were designed and built on Balmorra for use by IR and NR. The shields absorbed energy from blaster bolts to use for its own cannons, and it's pincers could grasp gunships. This could be cut from skirmish battles, but used in GC during the Palpatine era. Empire gets it by winning a land battle on Balmorra. To make it a challenge, there could be one that you would be forced to fight. For the NR, you could intercept the transport carrying them over Balmorra, which is what the original plan was in Dark Empire. After winning, you get the Vipers and can build the, on Balmorra. The drawbacks will be large population cap, slow movement speed, and vulnerable to weapons like concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, etc.

I personally like the idea. Though it would be a lot of work to implement it and I am not in any position to do anything, but still. It would be cool on the NR side.
On IR side though... Remnants are OP as they are. They don't really need an another ace in their hands...

Completely agree with that, just though how the shipment stolen by the NR was the only mention of the IR trying to secure X-1s. NR needs heavy ground units a lot more then IR.

But did the NR ever deploy the X-1s en masse?

Nope. Only point I can recall the NR ever going heavy on droid soldiers/units was with YVHs during the Vong war, and technically by that point it was the Galactic Alliance, not the New Republic. The NR preferred to keep organics involved when it came to weapons.
