Title: How are TIE Fighters supposed to land?
Post by: Pentastar Enforcer on March 05, 2015, 01:28:07 PM
I thought they had to be stored in racks, and since they don't have landing gear (unlike the x-wing) they couldn't just be put anywhere like it's shown in the new canon. Can anyone shed some more light upon this?

Simple. Everything in Star Wars is VTOL.

Pretty sure they have been known to land/take off without racks in the old Expanded Universe as well.  I assume that the solar panels/wings are more sturdy than they look.

I didn't think TIE Fighters could land either, I know certain TIE's that could but Fighters didn't

According to Wookieepedia and other sources I can't remember, the ties Were almost always launched from racks in the ceiling if you played Jedi outcast on galaks ship there were racks for the ties but the actual fighters were structurally sound enough to land them on the wings but they weren't designed to do so the pilot hatch was on top and the pilot would need a ladder to get down so that's why there were racks it not only made it easier for the pilot to enter and exit but also leaving room for shuttles and transports on the hanger floor

Also the ability to pack hundreds of them into a small space. The Imperials tended to be quantity-over-quality folks back then.

Well in the Imps defense the thing carrying the TIEs is capable of slagging most worlds surfaces on its own...the TIEs were originally an afterthought.
Also according to the X Wing books TIEs can land on the solar panels, they can hover like a harrier jet on repulsor lifts like the x wings to take off and land. The racks just make launching from ships easier because they just drop and fly out.
