So, I had this idea regarding how heroes and the era system might be simulated to some extent in Ascendancy. Why not use pictures of prominent leaders in the EU in a similar fashion as the faction portraits already in Rebellion? There would be no tech restrictions, players could simply choose to have their faction represented by an image of Thrawn, Pellaeon, Zsinj etc.
Admittedly, you would be limited by the availability of good pictures from the comics, but I only see this as a big problem for the EOTH. It might be tougher to find pictures of NR leaders, since the EU mostly focuses on smugglers/pilots/Solos who weren't actually running things. I'm not advocating actual heroes in ascendancy, I just thought it would be fun to be able to choose a "faction leader" so to speak.

I think that's already planned? Be odd to keep Vanilla portraits.

Oh, I didn't think they would keep the old ones, I just thought that the faction's logos would be used instead.

That is what we're doing, for several reasons. The AI factions are already granted a random name as in vanilla, which are the places we're using prominent people/groups (Warlord Zsinj, etc). If we did that as well as make the portraits be different leaders, the pictures would never match who the game says it is; you'd have a faction called Warlord Zsinj and it'd be using Isard or Daala or Thrawn, etc as the portrait. There's also the issue of art quality. Sure there's "good" pictures of most of these leader, however they're in no way standardized. They all have painfully different art styles with wildly different backgrounds and would just look tacked on unless we went through and hand-drew all of them, which would be extremely difficult and time-consuming at the resolution we need.

Never thought of hand drawing as a common modder trait.

Not hand drawing as in sketching it or whatever, but using photoshop to draw it like that. Codeuser did our Isard icon by drawing a portrait.

I hadn't thought about the varying art quality, that would look odd I guess. And having the wrong portrait would look even more odd... Oh well.
