Whenever I'm attacked, my ships are automatically arranged to defend. The really sad thing is if I have a bunch of Interdictors, at least a few will be up front and be almost immediately killed. Is there any way to change how my defenders are arranged for battle (as in, stronger ships up front)?

If you zoom in on your fleet, you can put any ship of your choice in first slot that has a box around it. Then, that ship will be the only ship that warps into the battle, and with that unit you can scout out an area(but usually the FoW goes away before scouting is really useful)and warp your units of choice in 8=)

He's talking when he's attacked, not when he's attacking. The first slot only works when you attack.
When attacked, you're just SOL, and you're going to lose weak units because that's how the game was programmed to make very stupid decisions and put your weakest ships up front so they can be destroyed immediately.

Sadly true and something hard coded into the game...

That's kind of a bummer, 'cause I really need those Interdictors and do not like having to build a bunch just to keep one working to trap the enemy. I guess I'll add that to the list of things to tolerate ("Freeze problems", I'm looking at YOU).

USUALLY, if as soon as battle starts you pause, highlight your interdictors, and tell them to move to the back (while still paused), you can save them. Not ALWAYS mind you, but usually.

Just one of those tricks needed for a lazy vanilla game. Most fights against the AI are easily won through clever use of the pause and fast forward buttons.

Yeah, sad that such tricks are necessary because the developers didn't take the time to iron out the bugs in what is, overall, an excellent game.

Yes sad indeed
