Title: Star Wars Empire at War "On Unity" ?
Post by: Rovert10 on July 03, 2013, 07:17:50 PM
A group is trying to rebuild EaW on an entirely new engine?

http://www.moddb.com/games/eawou

Though it seems they will be doing some things different.

I'm personally not a fan of the Unity engine. I would much rather see something done on Unreal or the Cryengine SDK. I still wish them the best of luck though.

This was what happened in the team chat when Codeuser found it and gave us the link. I'm too lazy to reformat it or express my own opinion so sorry team for outing you:

Anthony (Dr. Knickers): Have you guys seen this
Anthony (Dr. Knickers): http://www.moddb.com/games/eawou
Corey: No
Corey: Why would they do this
Anthony (Dr. Knickers): It's not an entirely bad idea
Corey: Yes it is
Anthony (Dr. Knickers): Just the possibility of being shut down, I suppose
Pox: damn
Pox: it would be nice to have a EaW like that
Pox: no more stupid engine limitations
Slornie: I didn't think Unity was particularly great for modding support though?
Pox: oh I didn't know that :(
Pox: well that sucks
Enceladus: Why Unity...
Enceladus: Unity is awful in so many  ways
Enceladus: espcially with UDK and the free Crytek SDK
Pox: I kinda thought about trying to do some eaw like mod in the sc2 enginge at one point
Corey: It isn't EaW without engine limitations
Corey: It's EaW with /different/ engine limitations
Pox: yeah probably
Pox: probably even worse if mod support sucks for unity
Corey: Who plays EaW for the mods anyways?

So yeah, good luck to them, I'm just not sure if EaW is the right thing to try to replicate and that Unity is the right place to do it, honestly.

Wow, really? It never ceases to amaze me how popular EAW is for a six year old game... In spite of its myriad deficiencies, and largely just because it was the only game in town if you wanted Star Wars strategy. This project seems interesting, but somehow I have a feeling Disney won't let this slide.

I like the way you can see reinforcements coming. Can it be done to ICW?

Why would you rebuild a game as terrible as EaW? The only good things about it were the hardpoint system, how reinforcements came in during battle, and how things such as scale, skins, and variants can be done in ship XMLs. Instead of remaking it, you're better off making a new game, RTS likely would be best, which takes the good elements of EaW and tosses out the many bad parts of it.

The page does list that "we need good models and designers at the moment" - TR has the former in abundance. Perhaps consider making a donation?
