Title: Assault Frigate vs Dreadnaught
Post by: cjc070 on June 12, 2013, 11:09:29 PM
I know I am nicpicking but why is the Assault Frigate less expensive than the Dreadnaught.  Shouldn't the Assault Frigate cost more since it is a modified version of the Dreadnaught (ex. Imperial Star Destroyer vs Imperial II Star Destroyer).

Well, its actually not quite a direct upgrade. The assault frigate was designed to have a similar appearance to the dreadnaught, which despite being older packs a lot more punch. The dreadnaught itself was also based on an old Mandalorian design, if my memory serves me properly.

No, the assault frigate is made directly from the Dreadnaught.  They stripped off much of the exterior and rebuilt it to lighten it to make it faster, slaved many systems to make the crew requirements more manageable, and added more weapons.  Overall, the Assault Frigate mk1 is more powerful than the Dreadnaught, however it (in canon, anyway, probably in the game also since I can't remember off the top of my head) carries no fighter complement (internally, I believe it has umbilical racks like the Carrack and Nebulon-B to carry a few) anymore and it's weapons systems cannot all fire simultaneously due to the engines still being Dreadnaught engines and not producing enough power for them all.  Also, the weapons don't have the range of the original Dreadnaught.  So while it is a far more capable ship overall, the Dreadnaught has fighters and longer ranged weapons which could fire faster.

Oh okay, I hadn't known that. In game the dreadnaught always seemed like the superior, if slower ship.

It might be in game.  I'm not sure what all they changed from Dreadnaught to Assault Frigate in game, I just know the differences in the canon ships.

What I have read was that the Dreadnaught had longer range and the Assault Frigate had a stronger punch but was considered a superior vessel because of Imperials attempting to take them.

But I agree with how they show the two in the game the Dreadnaught is slower but packs a meaner punch.  I still think the Assault Frigate has it all in the looks department.

FYI all this information is brought to you by Wookieepedia.  Wiki rocks.

they have lighter armor and improved engines as well as took less crew. It was meant to be a cheap way to make a slow crew sensitive ship modern and more to the New Republic's need for quick escorts.

There is a question of the differences in firepower between the two ships in-game, as the Assault Frigate's quad laser cannons in-universe would probably cycle faster than turbolasers, but in 2.0, they fire at the same rate.

It's not that the Dreadnaught isn't a powerful and deadly ship, it's that it's impractical for use in large numbers. The Rebellion especially would never have been able to use a standard Dreadnaught for many reasons. It had a huge crew requirement, and the Rebellion is small, it's slow so it kind of fails for escaping which is kind of important, and from what I remember it's a maintenance hog and the Rebellion is stretched for resources. In many ways it's in a similar situation to the Victory I. It's so slow that while it was incredibly capable when it was first introduced it fell behind in speed greatly enough over the years that it became completely impractical to use. All the firepower in the world can't help you when the enemy ships can just stay out of your range or escape extremely easily. The Assault Frigate answers many of these problems for the Rebellion, so while it isn't a direct upgrade it is a far more usable ship.

on a different note, the Victory II is superior in every way comparing it to the Victory I? or could the missile launchers would make the use of Victory I worth?

Vic1 is better against fighters due to the missile launchers.

Vic2 is superior to your larger ships corvette and above.  While the missiles are useful against corvette sized ships, the sluggishness of the Vic1 makes it a wash since corvettes can simply run away from it preventing it from targeting them.
