On this topic you can talk about anything that happened on WWII or is said that happened.
-
The corsair has a 11-1 death ratio. Pilots of the P-51 Mustang said that they broke the sound barrier while diving.
-
I was rather thinking about the WWII conversations in other topics.
-
than scratch my last post.
-
Saying that the Allies were evil, is like saying Hitler was misunderstood.
-
I don't say Hitler was misunderstood. Everybody knows that Hitler was a lunatic. But that doesn't mean that allies were very kind and nice to everybody. Hell mayber worst crimes made by western allies (I don't even mention Russias crimes, list would go forever) was those made by canadians. They were very cruel to germans. No offense, Arbiter. They justified their cruelty by the failed assault on Dieppe 1942. And there are records of many british and other commowealth troops shooting german paratroopers after they had surrendered in Crete 1941. So what I'm saying is that all sides did make war crimes but only losers were punished. I mean Jodl and Keitel were hanged because they planned and accepted plans to make the war. why didn't anybody punish those russian commanders who attacked Finland in 1939?
-
when will peapole leave the past in the past and look at the present
and finald won so what are you whining a bount
-
I don't whine, I just used it as an example of how the winners are never punished.
And I do know that Finland won two wars against soviet russia.
-
Meyer, because the winner writes the history, why would the winning side punish troops that just won them a war, regardless of whether they earned the punishment or not to the victor go the spoils, thats how it has always been and always will be.
-
yes I know that. And that should tell to everyone that those punished might not have deserved it.
-
exactly but then again none of us were alive when this happened so we couldnt have said anything could we?
-
no. but you can question things that were done.
-
The reason that none of the Russian commanders were punished, was because the soviets didn't want to kill them all, until the next purge, and western allies brining them up on crimes would have lead to WW3. Another possible reason was that at the time, Finland was allied to Germany.
-
That's a wicked lie that communist tell. At least American leaders realized it during the war. If Finland was allied to Germany, which we were not, why din't USA declare war to Finland? It did declare war to all countries allied to Germany.
-
I always read that Finland was an ally of Germany, those communists have influenced history. I am sorry.
-
From what I read, Finland and Italy were in the war for themselves, though Italy was much more involved. Finland spent most of the war repelling the Russians, and since Germany had some interest in it, they helped Finland a bit.
-
There was no signed treaty that said we are allies to Germany. We only wanted to humiliate Russia and get back the lands they stole from us in Winter War. Why do you think we didn't help the germans in the siege of Leningrad?
-
Italy had very high expectations for the war, that were never realized. A new roman empire. yeah right. Good point Meyer.
-
Because you didn't care? Like I said, Finland was in it for themselves, they were happy with driving Russia back along with a bit of German help, though weren't about to start fighting against Germany and Italy.
-
Mussolini was a cracy. ended up hanging in gas station. But don't judge theitalian people too harshly. they did revolt against fasist and Mussolini. althought they did it after allies began their invasion of Italy.
-
I'm not about to judge anyone too harshly, I'm mainly German, Russian and Italian.
-
By Italy I meant Mussolini. The rest of the Italians joined the allies.
-
and did wise, in my opinion.
-
I they had believed Mussolini, they would have fought to the end.
-
Hey Italians couldn't have won Greek without Germany to come to help. Who could have they defeat allies. It has little irony in my mind, the last defenders of Italy were germans. Just like Berlin in 1945 was defended by french SS-men.
-
That is pretty ironic, but the germans didn't want a whole huge front to the south, and those french believed in fascism.
-
true. Those french knew they would be killed as traitors.
Finnish SS-men had more luck.
-
There were Finnish SS men?? But I am really not surprised. Almost every country near Europe had people in the SS.
-
Yep. there were finnish SS-men. All were anti-communists, at least as far as I know. One was even so anti-communist that after the war he fled commies to USA and joined american military.
-
I think that I like him. Know who he was??
-
I bet almost all finns know him. does the name Lauri T
-
I don't think that I have ever heard of him, and I read a lot about ww2 and watch the history channel.
-
Well do you know the name he used in USA: Larry Thorne.
-
That sounds familliar.
-
thought so.
-
who is he?
-
Larry Thorne? A great man who did everything to stop communism spreading. first he fought in finnish army, then in SS and after that he joined usa army.
-
oh.
-
Can you imagine. An SS-men in the army of USA.
-
If they had good intentions in both armies, i could see many ss men in the us army. Even though they are vastly different.
-
Yep. SS was the elite among the german army. What is the elite in USA army.?
-
Rangers, maybe, special forces, stuff like that.
-
well Thorne was of a US special force. Then their chopper crashed and he and his team died.
-
In Korea, Vietnam where?? Was he part of the green berets??
-
"He ended up as an instructor in the Special Forces and taught skiing, survival, mountaineering and guerrilla tactics. In turn he learned parachuting. From 1958 to 1962 he served in the 10th Special Forces unit in West Germany. In November 1963 he joined the Special Forces unit A-734 in Vietnam and fought in the Mekong Delta. He was decorated twice.
In 1965 he had been transferred to MACVSOG training unit in Vietnam as a military advisor. On October 18, 1965, he left for a clandestine mission and his helicopter crashed 25 miles (40 km) from Da Nang, in a mountainous area of Laos. When the rescue squad arrived, they did not find his body. It is assumed that he either died in the crash or in battle on October 18.
Shortly after his disappearance in Laos, Thorne was granted the rank of a major in the U.S. Army.
Larry Thorne's remains were found in 1999 and formally identified in 2003. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on June 26, 2003."
Straight from wikipedia.
-
Does it say how they finally found his remains??
-
As far as I know they were under search for years. And that they were found somewhere in the vicinity of the crashed chopper.
Hell Thorne was even a model for a movie character played by John Wayne. Green Berets rock!
-
Cool, I like that movie.
-
hae you seen it?
-
twice. Apparently it is also historically accurate in the sense that it shows what life in Vietnam was like for soldiers.
-
haven't seen it. all I know about it is the info I have gotten from wikipedia
-
It's a good movie, but this has absolutely nothing to do with ww2 now.
-
true. back on the topic boys.
-
Boys?
-
are you a girl then?
too bad Arbiter prevented our conversation on the Who would win in a war? topic.
-
That would have been a fun discussion.
-
are you a girl then?
too bad Arbiter prevented our conversation on the Who would win in a war? topic.
It sounded gay.
-
right. so in the army you must be gay. Now I realise why Arbiter and whoever didn't want to go.
-
;D ;D
-
stop smiling it drives me angry.
-
Im not smiling, the faces are smiling.
-
That would have been a fun discussion.
that's why I would have wanted that that would have stayed open. It would have brought much joy to us all.
