We're doomed!
To elaborate, SW games will now be made by the worst company in America (actual poll results). Granted, EA has published some great games (thanks Bioware) but their past practices lead me to believe the next SW game we get will cost 80 dollars, require day one DLC that costs another 10, and it will probably only be 30% of a game. The rest will be seven DLC packs that cost another 20 dollars each.
Oh and you'll have to always be online on their servers, which will be overloaded and make the game unplayable once you buy it (see: Simcity). They'll probably charge us money to use their servers and might even charge us money to get a slot of the overloaded servers...
We're doomed...

It's a real pity. Lucasarts was such a paragon of employment standards and quality game design.

While I agree with this wonderfully sarcastic remark, I'm hoping EA doesn't continue the trend. Their track record with Command and Conquer, Sims, and Medal of Honor gives me cause for concern.
-
Stay tuned for Star Wars SIMS. Arrange the furniture in the death star. Drown the emperor in the pool.
-
yoda- clouded by dark side the future is.
star wars sims needs to happen, aside from that well i'ma get m cyanide tablets and gun and go out with a gurgle and bang.
-
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!
This is truly horrible.
-
I'm hopeful about it. DICE, Visceral, and Bioware are all candidates for makign the new games (I enjoy the Battlefield series, Dead Space and the Old Republic games/ Mass Effect (ignoring the ending on 3). So it has a chance.
-
EA puts out some horrible games and fucks up a lot. They also put out some good games. Lucasarts on the other hand hasn't put out a good game since 2004.
-
Sums that up well.

From what I heard, there will be new Star Wars games that will be on the Frostbite 3 engine which is being used for Dragon Age III: Inquisition and Battlefield.
Personally, I am sad that LucasArts was dissolved, but I won't rant against EA till their first game releases. Its kind of like how it is with Disney and the next Star Wars Trilogy. They did good with the Avenger movie, since Disney bought Marvel Studios. However, I am still gonna have to wait and see how the next movie looks before putting my foot down and going insane or actually sitting there quite happy as I watch.

Wise advice for us all to heed. I agree entirely.

TOR doesn't count as their first game? :P
-
TOR is an MMO, which is really a completely different ball game than a single player game. Besides, it's really not TOO bad.
-
I like TOR mostly for the storyline and the cool classes as well as the races. However gameplay is very WoW-like which was a major turn off. I personally would have loved to see a combination of gameplay and mechanics from GuildWars 2 with Star Wars setting.
-
I'm more concerned about them making Battlefront 3 and then pulling the s**t they did with BF3.
* Origin Only
* Purchasable weapons ingame
* Restrictive DRM
* Noticeable lack of modding tools
* Key concepts removed and replaced to accommodate COD kiddies
* Did I mention they want you to buy items in a game you've already paid full retail for? Because they totally do.
Lasers are red,
Ion bolts are blue,
I hate EA
You should too.

No, I shouldn't. My favorite game series come from Electronic Arts. Now I know it's the hip and cool thing to hate on EA because it's EA, but wait and see before you cast that judgement of yours.

I'm not hating on EA just for the sake of being 'hip'. I used to not give a flying crap who my games were coming from until I saw what a mess they've made in the past few years. I'd ask what game series you like that's published by them, because the general consensus is that most, if not all, recent updates to their IPs have been less than satisfactory. Command and Conquer 4. SimCity 5. Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Dead Space 3. Mass Effect 3 (wasn't bad persay, but clearly rushed)...and now 4 on the way (lord knows how they're going to pull that off), and lastly Battlefield, the upcoming fourth of which looks no different from the third. There's also their pathetic excuse for a Steam knockoff, Origin, that they now force anyone who buys games from them to use.
See, the purpose of a business is to make profit. I know that. But EA takes cashcowing to a whole new level, to the point where you get absolutely cruddy titles like Warfighter, utterly asinine decisions like the one to make the upcoming CnC an F2P, and blatant cashgrabs like their Play4free games. That's why I'm so distraught over them getting sole licensing rights. Just you wait and see, they're going to milk this as much as they can then toss it aside...and what then? They have sole. licensing. rights. No one else can make any Star Wars games.
Lucas might've been very detached from his community, but having the mantle given to such a disreputable company like Electronic Arts is much worse than mere inactivity. If I'm wrong, and it decides not to screw Star Wars up the bum like all its other series, then I'm wrong. But I find that extremely unlikely given their stellar track record over the past three years, and their seeming discovery as of late that people are willing to put up with microtransactions within retail-priced titles.
-
My favorite EA Games are the Battlefield Series, Mass Effect, and the first Dragon Age. I own all of those games sans DA 2 and I can say they've all performed very well.
Now, if EA has DICE Make the new Battlefront? Holy shit I'll be excited. And if we get another KOTOR Esque title because it was given to Bioware? Man, that'll be the fucking best. I don't know about you guys, but I am excited for the titles they might release.

I know I sound like a broken record here, but I'd be more worried about this if Lucasarts hasn't been shit for the last several years. It's a horizontal move if anything. They were at least as cashcowwy as EA has been, but without the high notes of EA.

I'd like you to take a look at a little game called Battlefield Play4free and tell me how you feel about it after an hour. It probably won't have as much meaning to you as you probably never saw the game before EA decided it wasn't pulling its weight, but..
Anyway, I confess I liked ME3 and didn't have much of a problem with the ending. If you want to see the reasons people do there's plenty of sources online concerning it. But that's Bioware. I imagine if they had their way it'd be over after 3, but instead EA's making them create 4, something that's indubitably going to go awful. It'd be sorta like Halo 4 where it's set after what was supposed to be the last game in the franchise, but without the commitment of the fans that worked within the company. That's not to say Bioware doesn't like its own story, but I can't imagine they'll feel any compulsion to put as much thought into it as the first three titles..
As for DICE making BFIII, I wouldn't have issue with that. Battlefront was originally a Battlefield ripoff in the first place (and objectively a rather poor one at that). What I do have an issue with is EA doing the publishing and making these stupid executive decisions that sacrifice the integrity of the game to pull some extra money in.
Lastly, KOTOR. You do realize TOR was made by Bioware, riiiight? (and apparently is the KOTOR 3 campaign) The game they had to go F2P just a year or two after release because subscribers were leaving in troves? They're unlikely to make any other Old Republic title while that's still bringing in revenue.
Justified pessimism is always better than blind optimism. Hop on chat sometime so we can yell at each other, eh?
@Corey
How so? The only recent blunder I can think of is Kinect Star Wars. We had 1313 coming out, as well as First Assault and Battlefront 3 if FA did well. I don't see how they're cashcowwy, either. Sure, there are a few stinkers like Republic Heroes, but they don't have any F2P titles (except for CWA, and that's Sony), they don't rehash the same thing every freaking year, they don't even make DLC for their games, for pete's sake! How could you possibly say that?

I've played every single Battlefield game in existence. Except Operation Eagle, which came before 1942 and isn't really Battlefield. Yes, p4f was awful. But every single Battlefield game I've played was exceptionally enjoyable. 1 bad game isn't going to have that much sway over my opinion of DICE, I assure you.

Making them create 4? As I understand it, it's another game within the Mass Effect universe, not Mass Effect 4. There's nothing wrong with this idea. If there was, then technically Star Wars is a bad IP and we the TR team shouldn't making mods for it.

There hasn't been a DICE Game that I don't enjoy regardless of of EAs decisions.

Yes, I know it was made by them. It's a great game and the only Co-op RPG with interesting consequences for your actions.
Does this make ToR bad or something? Games going F2p in MMO format isn't bad in any shape or fashion. Just about every MMO has gone f2p and made droves of cash money. TOR apparently doubled its income just by going f2p.
Perhaps they won't release a KOTOR based title, but Bioware is still a great company. And I'm willing to try any Star Wars title they create.
Justified pessimism is always better than blind optimism. Hop on chat sometime so we can yell at each other, eh?
It's not blind optimism if all my past experiences with EA have been filled with fun and memorable moments.

They rushed out EaW/FoC, causing a slew of features to be cut. Like Diplomacy, 35 units that Petroglyph admitted existed, and 3 way galactic conquest.
KOTOR 2 was rushed in favor of Christmas sales due to how popular the first one was. And because of that we lost so much content and narrative direction.
LA Also cut Battlefront 3 in favor of the handheld version of Battlefront
TFU 2 was also made out of nowhere, rushed, and then simplified so they could make a quick buck.
There is nothing wrong with DLC. Yes, there are some notable cases where developers are bad about it. But keep in mind that EA is by no means the worst.

Okay what was the last game that LucasArts made on their own as a development house that was actually worth paying for?
The recent Star Wars games worth paying for have all been outsourced to various other developers.
Also Force Unleashed had DLC as well as some others...
LucasArts is not innocent in this case.
The roles are reserved in that you're completely cynical of EA. I don't like their business practices either (dat SimCity shit) but doesn't mean i'll give them eternal damnation. They have good games no matter how much they milk them, the base games are still good.
Yet you have this blind affinity of LucasArts even though that golden age of them is well past.

Agreed, the only game they've made in a long time I thought was any good was TFU, and that had a crappy sequel. Personally I think all these game studios are quite competent to the task and I'm looking forward to seeing what they give us. It doesn't really make sense for DICE to make anything other than Battlefront, seeing as they created Battlefield and Battlefront is basically a Battlefield spin-off. Admittedly there are some differences but I think DICE will be able to do a good job.
-
The Force Unleashed was decent but too repetitive. It could have been much better with more emphasis on lightsaber technique rather than hack and slash. Battlefront could also have been better. Basically most SW games within the last 8 years have been good potential but should have been much better
-
yes tis a shame
-
Indeed. If only we could clone the mod teams of the world and replace all stock at Lucasarts and Disney with their work.
-
Perhaps they can redeem themselves with star wars. I mean well all know we have been wanting a republic commando 2 -_^
-
I rather doubt it.
-
Pray to the god-gods you worship that it happens.

Pray to me all you want, I can't make Disney do anything.

Hm, difficult as I believe in Nothing! To the Nothingness I pray!

Sorry, but praying to god to make good video games is like asking god to help you win the lotto: it just doesn't work.
