Title: Bombers underpowered - I know they are supposed to be but...
Post by: bharryb on April 22, 2011, 06:38:52 PM
Hello

I have read a couple of threads about bombers needing big fighter escorts etc so as to be effective and their damage has been reduced.

I think that is great, especially that they don't go right through shields anymore. Would it be better though to have them do 1% damage through shields and then 2-3% when there is no shields? Or is that impossible from a programming standpoint?

I would think though, that once shields are down, a torpedo salvo from a B wing squadron should utterly tear apart a star destroyer (it was like that in the x-wing games, and some of the books).

Today I was playing about with different units and I had an mc90 cruiser destroy 4 space station hard points in the time it took a THREE B wing squads to get through one hard point.

I also notice that the torpedos hit things if they are between that and the target, and since the B wing's largely buzz around stations it does not make for effective attacking.

Perhaps bombers would be more effective if they got their lasers back so they are doing additional damage?

At the moment it is better for me to be doing my 'bombing' with 2 x-wing squads instead of 1 B-wing squad.

Thanks for the fantastic mod. This is really adding to the replayability of this game, and I found it replayable as it was. Really appreciated :D

1. Bombs do bypass shields.
2. Bombers do still have lasers.
3. Making them do different amounts of damage to shields and hull is not possible.
4. That kind of thing (one salvo destroying ship x) is not good for gameplay in an RTS. You could just take on an entire fleet with a single squadron of bombers.
