I think the new Canon has taken the approach of Ne Republic having a small core fleet and then being able to pool resources from member planets in a time of emergency which would possibly explain a lack of new fighting vessels (demilitarized = little investment).  What the Resistance has could be more interesting.  It's likely that as the New Republic disarmed and mothballed its fleet Leia and allies funnelled some of this to the new Resistance.  They might even have retained Winter's services as undercover quartermaster again!

From what I have seen so far the First Order has a far more varied fleet with new designs (or at least, Before the Awakening names lots of stuff that didn't exist in Legends).
I just read into that and first of all: Yeah Lancer, again something from the Legends.
Second: Your theory might be right. Since the New Republic doesn't lead an open War against the First Order it is likely that they mothballed their fleet.
But right now: Who knows for sure? Let's see what the new Novels and Episode VIII will do.
Perhaps we will see another SSD, because even in the Wiki it says in the Resurgent-Class Articel
"Despite its impressive size, it was not the largest vessel within the First Order's navy, with Resistance intelligence believing even larger warships were in development. "

I thought they were T-75 X-Wings, but 85 sounds better imo. If civil war ships are still in common use within the republic, is it safe to say that Star Destroyers could be in use by other factions (such as the First Order, or preferably some sort of Imperial Remnant that isn't First Order related if it exists.)

Depending on how much Mon Monthma disarmed the New Republic after Jakku is what is really gonna make that fleet size up, but I cannot wait either way - I've heard that Episode VIII Is going to be very dark, so I'm assuming lots of battles death and all that good stuff!

Keen-eyed viewers pointed out that during the destruction of the Hosnian system, you can see the ships of the much-talked-about Republic fleet being destroyed. Below is a picture from Wookieepedia:

AFAIK, there has been no canonical confirmation as to what ships made up this fleet, however, considering Before The Awakening has Home One and MC80s as part of the Resistance fleet, which is made up of donations from the Republic, we can presume the MC80 lived through long service in the New Republic. Sure enough, the group of ships that are illuminated near the bottom left look Mon-Cal to me. To the far upper-left of the shot are what look like GR-75 transports. So the case seems to be that the Republic's fleet is made up of civil-war era ships with the only new technology produced being the X-Wing's successors, the T-70 as used by the Resistance, and Before The Awakening also has the Republic using a newer model than that, the T-85 (also from Wookieepedia):

Hopefully we will see more Republic forces in Episode VIII - unless they're going to write that the fleet destroyed at Hosnian Prime was the Republic Fleet. Until then, New Republic: Bloodline is coming out on May 3rd and is set 6 years before TFA, so we'll probably find out more about the New Republic's forces of the era in that.
