The only real legal way to "monetize" this at all would be if I were to make a youtube/twitch channel where I did Let's Plays of the mod and turned ad revenue/paid subscriptions on. That's basically it.

So you can't "accidentally" post your paypal details or something ?

Trust me, I tried to be the John Hammond(Spare no expense) of the enterprise back in 2010 during my Oil Rig days. As Corey and the team mentioned, Legality prevented me, so instead I aquired artists, VO equipment and unit ideas all hours of the day. I imagine I was quite insufferable.

The risk of giving us money is that it'll be spent on whiskey and then who knows what the hell we will produce, let alone when! :)

Hey do you guys have a kickstarter thing started?

I know I'd like to donate a little, possible get something out of it, even if its just like a little model or a poster or something. With the new X-wing game a cool looking model or even a printed card would be a awesome extra. Of course getting that printed might be a logistical nightmare now that I think of it. Maybe something added to the game ? hit $500 - add a new planet type. Hit $1k get your name mentioned in the credits ?

My face when we're sued if Corey actually did this (he won't).

one big vicious cycle of my free time going down the drain in caffeine-fueled all-night modding sessions

And we love you for them. :)

No, we don't have a kickstarter or any other form of financial contribution stuff. We don't and can't ever make any money from this (it'd be a race to see whether Ironclad/Stardock sues us first, or Disney), and since it's a hobby and we all work on it on a volunteer basis, there's no overhead except for whatever programs we may need to buy. Rewards of any sort would be a logistical nightmare, actually. There's really only 3-4 people in active development at any give time, sometimes less, so it's hard enough to find enough time to get the content itself done, much less find a way to make physical rewards and get them to people.

That being said, we have considered doing little contest things with the prize being a poster and some other stuff (limited based on the fact that I'm in school and my job pays minimum wage, so I'm cheap) which we may pursue at some point. And I do intend to get the Phalanx 3D printed as a little desk model thing at some point, so when I do that I'll probably post the link to where I set it up in case anyone else wants to order one.

As far as stretch goals go, the reason they tend to work for Kickstarter-type projects is that the extra funds make it possible for those sorts of things to be added, whereas in our case that's not really a factor (unless people were donating so we could all quit our jobs and mod full time, which would be fun). The limiting factors for us as far as content goes are time and whether or not it makes sense in the mod, so limiting content based on funding goals would be a little sketchy of us. IF something makes sense, we'll do our best to accomdate it in whatever prioritized order seems to make the most sense.

It may sound super cliche, but the best way to support the project really is just to give feedback, suggestions, comment on stuff and spread the word. We're making this because it's something we want to play, and there's nothing that motivates us more than seeing that other people  are excited for it or looking forward to it to, or interested enough to give their suggestions. There's nothing that deflates work ethics on projects like this than a resounding "meh." The more people respond to what we put out there, the more we try to put out, and then that means even more people become interested in the project and it turns into one big vicious cycle of my free time going down the drain in caffeine-fueled all-night modding sessions

I dunno, maybe its just something to think about if you dont have one already. If you do have one please post the link so I can throw something your way.
