Yeah Thrawn is probably battling them in The unknown regions. I love it if the resistance and first order have a big battle and Thrawn transmits a message giving both factions the finger and telling him he is here to bring order to the Galaxy. He would warp in with several SDs and A SSD. :)

Something I always found weird in the new canon was how they explain the New Republic didn't attack the first order because they didn't want to be seen as breaking the treaty which is odd as the first order already was. What would explain this is if the first order is part of an overall larger empire or at least not all of it. And how cool would it be cool if Thrawn was the leader.

As stated earlier it will never be the SW we grew up with and while I didn't like how similar they made the Inquisitors(or those utterly ridiculous lightsabers) I did appreciate that they added them and the Immobilizor 418 in. Vader was also very well done as he was massively more powerful than anyone else in the show and did convey a genuine sense of menace that had been missing. I feel they will give the basic version of Thrawn and build off it. It's a compromise I am willing to work with considering it opens the door to many more possibilities. I still don't pay to watch Rebels or give money to Disney to further their ambitions, but it was a step in the right direction for compromise.

It will be interesting to see what happens with him. As it stands, while I am sure his story will change his personality will more than likely remain intact. If that is the case (and provided he doesn't die) I can't see him as a supporter of the First Order. In this universe, perhaps the EotH (or something like it) gets formed later by Thrawn due to his discontent with the way the Remnant of the Empire is heading (staying in glory days past, instead of realizing its mistakes and rectifying them).

Yeah, I totally expect Thrawn's story to be largely re-written in the new canon. I was just throwing out a possibility for where (as yet) it may not contradict Legends.

That's quite true, but if the demotion was followed immediately by events which validated Thrawn's disobedience that might be enough for a stay of execution.  It might also explain why the second promotion (as I'm going to deem it in my head-canon for now) was kept such a secret - not because Thrawn is non-human but because it showed the Emperor to be fallible.

That's true because Vader's character trait is that he has a menacing presence - he stands over people and talks down to them. With Thrawn, it's his intense analysis, and we're likely to see plenty shots of him studying art thoroughly - which is conveyed nicely with pupils moving around.
