It depends on the person's preferance and skill... No program will make somebody automatically good. 3DS Max and Maya are the main professional ones... Both are very expensive, but theres a Maya version thats free with all the features except theres a large watermark over the screen.

wings 3d is very good. I use it as well. And I've seen people do amazingly awesome things with it...

I suggest you just work on modelling things for a while, and getting into skinning later...
