Personally, I think my plan would be to build some awesome stuff before losing Isard, and then using Thrawn as a force multiplier.
You can do that makes the game really easy though (looks at 3 Executors+ Sovereigns).

Doesn't thrawn have better heroes, and thus can make entire fleets more powerful with combat bonuses as a result? Thus thrawn can be more efficient with his power at the cost of a permanent reduction in power if a hero is lost.

Palpatine can build and replace more powerful ships, but many are battlecruisers and SSDs that are more vulnerable to bombers.

Unless I've misheard the 2.2 playthroughs....

Thrawns not useless, add a fleet of smaller ships like carracks and strike cruisers and his fleets an put out some serious pain. Killed a SSD with a fleet like that 0 losses.

For one thing, that's when the New Republic and Empire of the Hand start getting much better ships themselves. Also, if you read the news posts talking about how era changes work, things work a little differently- there's more negatives for getting your leader killed, and Palpatine doesn't show up automatically.

IN era 1 you have Isard and the ability to build more SSD for 28k at Kuat.

Isard dies and you get Thrawn and co. Is there any reason not to just solo Thrawn into the nearest AI fleet and start the dark empire. In era 2 you can't build any super ships and in Dark Empire you get.

1. Palpatine in the Eclipse
2. Free Praetor II hero
3. Ability to build more Praetors
4. Ability to build more Sovereigns
5. Ability to build the tank droids.

And some more capital ship heroes probably better than Thrawn and co. Apart from RP reasons why keep Thrawn aound?
