I know your pain, that RAM fix I think you're talking about only works for the GOG version of the game for whatever reason. And I think you only need it for EAW RE. However there's another one that fixes the windows issue the name escapes me, you just need to look up EAWFOC windows fix and you'll find it along the way it gives you a SWFOC.EXE I think. Whenever you can please save up money and switch to the steam version. I had the disc version and now that I have the Steam version life is so much easier.

Thanks for the suggestion; sounds like most of my older games that I haven't played in years are now DOA thanks to Microsoft....

Anyway, when I'll keep an eye out for sales on both sites for the game. 

I see the downloads page says to use .RAR version for Steam; does this also apply to GOG.com version?

Long story short, Win10 + securom = :'(
If you'd rather not find a no-cd hack, honestly, just purchase the gog.com or steam version of the game.  You can find it on sale sometimes for $10.
