I was thinking the other day of some mechanics I would like to see, and I though of this: surrendering. If a ground battle is going sour, or you have just 1 garrisoned unit left and no buildings (or vice versa), surrender to the enemy. Upon surrendering, any garrisoned units are placed into a "prison" (not an actual prison building) and are useless to the conquerors. Buildings, however, would be re-purposed for the enemy and would become functional buildings for them. To recapture the units, just take back the planet. buildings cannot be retaken, though. "But why not retreat" I hear you say, "you would keep your units". My response to that: time. In the ~10 second it takes to retreat, the enemy gets free, easy, defenseless targets to shoot at, plus a speed boost, and the player has no control over said units. Surrendering would be instant, thus ending any slaughter. This would only be for ground, but if you could (somehow) make it for space as well, that would be awesome.
