I see that happen on ground combat a lot...

Grodin Tierce can't die in space(I mean his ISD explodes but he's there in the roster afterwards) but if he dies on ground he dies permanently.

I've had this problem in land combat. It happened when the AI had nothing but turbolaser towers.

If the AI spawns multiple turbolaser special structures on a single planet (which is a bug in its own right) you can't finish the ground battle IIRC.

What I do in such situations on land battles is retreat, then invade again. Since there are no units or structures on the ground anymore, I automatically get the planet.

Yup, same as what I do.

I've had this problem in land combat. It happened when the AI had nothing but turbolaser towers. It's also a problem on Etti IV - the warlord there seem to have several platoons of stormtroopers but the only building on the ground is an abandoned heavy factory. I think the latter might be solved if minor faction AI is turned back on.

It happened to me before (as NR) the IR attacked me with a raid fleet in tow I auto-resolved but stayed watching while the raid fleet attacked the Imps and won with ease now with only the raid fleet in battle the Imps retreated and I won due to raid fleets not staying.

Ironically, auto-resolve didn't resolve anything; It didn't work.

This is a bug in some GCs as the game doesn't recognize he's dead but also won't let him move

Auto-resolve is your friend in situations like these, no need to wait for AI retreat.

I got engaged into a space battle between myself (EotH) and the IR, myself with a sizable fleet, and the Imperials with only Turr Phennir (dumb AI?). I was able to bring him down with 3 corvettes, but the battle didn't end after that. There were no other enemies, and I had to wait until the AI decided to call a retreat, almost 10 minutes later (patients is a virtue).
